The Ferron/Price Ranger District will be implementing prescribed burns in two separate areas of the district. The burns could start as early as May 14 and will continue until completed. Joe’s Valley prescribed burn, located just West of Joe’s Valley Reservoir, should be the earlier of the two and last one-two days. The Pines prescribed burn area is located approximately five miles northwest of the town of Emery. Currently, The Pines is tentatively scheduled for a later date.
Prescribed fire is one of the proven tools used to accomplish a variety of resource benefits including improved wildlife habitat, vegetation regeneration, hazardous fuels reduction and to support ecosystem diversity. To meet resource and safety concerns, prescribed fires must only occur when a specific set of conditions are met These conditions include favorable air, soil and vegetation moisture levels, temperatures, wind directions and speeds, smoke dispersal and expected fire behavior. The prescribed fire will only be ignited when fuel moistures and weather conditions are favorable. Qualified fire personnel will use hand crews to ignite fire in the designated area and will monitor the fire until it is completed.
