The Emery High School football program will enter a one-year transitional period next season as Coach Jimmy Jones will continue as head coach of the Spartans. That was the decision of the Emery School Board at the Jan. 7, board meeting at Canyon View Junior High School. However, the board made this decision only when it became apparent that no one currently employed by the district had applied for the position for the 2009 season. On Jan. 10, Coach Jones contacted Principal Larry Davis to inform him that he would accept the position for next season as part of the coaching transition.
Coach Jones, who is currently the principal at Canyon View Junior High School, was informed by Supt. Kirk Sitterud that in accepting the administrative position that he would no longer be eligible to be the head football coach after the 08 season. Initially, the school board chose to open the position up to applicants within the district.
Since that did not result in a replacement for Coach Jones for the 2009 season, the board chose to offer the one-year transitional period as an option.
Joining Coach Jones on the staff next year will be Emery High graduate Dean Stilson who is currently teaching and coaching at Canyon View Junior High School. He played for Coach Jones and has coached football at Altamont High School and at Canyon View.
Other staff members will be added in the near future.
Since the end of the football season, Coach Jones has continued to manage the affairs of the program. He has been working on the 2009 schedule, inventoried the equipment and is now preparing to order new equipment and uniforms for next season.
Although the schedule is yet to be finalized, it will include pre-season home games against Grand County and Desert Hills. Emery will be in the new Region 12, a 3A classification which includes North Sanpete, Manti, Richfield, Juab and Delta.
