Well, Happy New Year. You may think I’m a couple of weeks late in wishing our readers a Happy New Year, but it’s just one of those things I meant to do, but didn’t get around to it. But, the year is still young. I really wasn’t thinking too much about those New Year’s resolutions and all that propaganda, but then in church the other day, they had to get off on this subject of setting goals and trying to be a better person and making the world a better place and they went on and on.
Well, then I decided the idea might have some merit, so I started to think and wonder if I should be taking this more seriously so I thought I could probably make some improvements here and there.
For the past month or more, it seems like it started at Thanksgiving time. I just went on this eating binge. I stopped eating my oatmeal for breakfast and just started eating left over pumpkin pie for breakfast instead.
Since I like to Christmas shop and felt like a bit of a Santa, it didn’t feel unusual, when my lunch became milk and cookies. I make very good cookies and several people gave us cookies and I had to sample all of those so a milk and cookie diet was very cost effective too.
For dinner, there were several holiday parties to attend and I was first in line at the buffet table for most of those.
So, OK, I’m off the cookies, now, I still drink milk. I am eating my oatmeal again for breakfast. I know these sound like small things, but for me, they are some giant steps.
I am having sandwiches again for lunch, or meat and cheese, as Corey put us all on the meat and cheese diet about a year ago. We slipped up there during the holidays, but now it would seem we are back on track.
So, my eating is much healthier now, although I do backslide now and again, but I think that’s OK, going cold turkey off the treats, can make you very irritable.
For the exercise part of New Year’s resolutions, because it always seems like they go together, diet and exercise; I am back out on the track. I try to walk around the track while I wait for my son to get out of basketball each evening.
This worked really well, during football season and early fall. But, my track is now filled with snow. This wasn’t an obstacle though. I love snow. I think it’s great fun to walk through snow. Once I broke the trail around the track once, it wasn’t half bad trudging in the snow. It’s a way better work out than walking on clear ground. So you can’t let winter weather be a deterent to getting some exercise and some fresh air. It’s really very invigorating being outdoors in the winter. You have to prepare and dress for it. Warm coat, hat, boots, gloves and the works.
Well, it might not sound like much to you, oatmeal for breakfast and a little cold weather exercise. But, it’s a start, a small step. Small steps and taking just a little time to work on ourselves can lead to big improvements.
I was folding laundry last night and this is a mundane chore so I flipped on the TV and there was this show called the Biggest Loser. I had never seen it before. I’m not much of a TV watcher, I usually read if I have a spare minute or two. But, when I read and fold laundry at the same time, no one gets their right clothes in the right drawer, so I watched the Biggest Loser. Wow, some of these people weighed a lot. It was pretty amazing. But, they are trying to lose weight, trying to make their lives better. One man lost 30 pounds in one week. That was truly amazing to me. That is a lot of weight.
I’ve never been able to lose weight, but maybe I’ve never really tried; milk and cookies taste too good. But, wow, these people were really trying. It was great.
I guess we just need to get motivated. Everyone is so different, some of us are motivated and some of us just don’t seem to care about physical fitness and those things. I have one son that hit the gym every day while he was here. Now he is in the Fiji Islands on a church mission and the other day in an email he said he was 200 pounds and he doesn’t really watch what he eats. The missionaries just eat whatever is put in front of them and they are glad to have it. So, I guess he’ll have some work to do next year when he gets back.
Whatever your goals are for this year, I wish you good luck in reaching and attaining them. Just remember start small and work into it. Remember you can have some success every day in your life as you strive to reach your goals.
