Pirates win 4 games

Green River High went on their annual southern region road trip and came home with four victories as they swept Navajo Mountain and Monument Valley. The boys won 70-23 and 67-51 over the two schools while the girls won 76-33 and 52-42. On Friday at Navajo Mountain, Green River took a 33-1 first quarter lead over the undermanned opponent and then cruised to the easy victory. With Navajo Mountain only dressing five players, the game was really no contest. The next night at Monument Valley, in a very physical ball game, Green River again got out to a big first quarter lead and then never relinquished it. In this game they had a 30-11 first period lead.
Against Navajo Mountain, Brennan Bigelow and Jason Johnson each scored 14 points to lead the team in scoring as nine different Pirates scored in the game. Also in double figures for the night were Kayden Mecham with 11 points and Holden Marshall with 10 points. Tyson Johnson had eight points, Adam Steuer scored five points, Justin Johnson scored four points and Josh Smart and Cody Seager each scored two points.
The next night, Jason Johnson led the team with 18 points while Tyson Johnson and Kayden Mecham each scored 15 points in the win. Brennan Bigelow scored nine points, Holden Marshall scored four points and Adam Steuer, Josh Smart and Hayden Pfander each scored two points. Bigelow hit three 3-pointers in the game.
The Lady Pirates outscored Navajo Mountain 27-10 in the first quarter, 19-0 in the second quarter, 16-11 in the third period and 14-12 in the final quarter.
Brandi Webster led the way with 15 points while Lindsey Spadafora scored 12 points and Sarah Swalberg scored 10 points. Also scoring were Tracy Engleman, Melissa Antillon and Courtney Carter with six points each. Crosby Hatt scored five points with Brittney Bastian and Cady Mecham each scoring four points. Rounding out the scoring were Bailie Packer, Diana Flores and Bianca Trejo with two points each.
Against Monument Valley, Green River only led 14-9 after the first period and 29-17 at the half. They extended the lead to 16 points after three periods before Monument Valley won the final quarter 13-7 to keep the score close.
Webster led the team again in scoring, this time with 19 points. Mecham also scored in double figures with 10 points. Carter scored seven points with Packer, Crosby Hatt and Engleman each scoring four points. Swalberg and Spadafora each scored two points in the game. The boys now travel to Wasatch Academy this Friday night while the girls travel to Monticello this Thursday night.
