When I am wrong, I am man enough to admit it and I was wrong about the University of Utah and the Sugar bowl. I did not believe that the Utes could keep up with Alabama. Boy, what was I thinking?
I was not surprised that Utah got off to a quick start but I was surprised by the ease with which they handled the Crimson Tide the entire game. Bama was never in this game and I am pretty sure they are still wondering what in the world hit them. It was not supposed to be this way.
Usually, and maybe I am wrong here also, the Mountain West conference teams do not have the depth to play with the five to 10 really good teams in this country. On this day though they made believers out of most of the country and certainly out of me.
With that win, Utah exposed again the flawed thinking of this BCS propaganda. The BCS, and one can fill in the initials with many appropriate words, is sold as the opportunity to have a real national champion. What a bunch of crap. The BCS in nothing more than the rich getting richer while keeping the rest down on their knees begging for handouts.
While the winner of the Florida-Oklahoma game may very well be the best team in the country, we will never know for sure. Utah certainly made a case for consideration, as has USC. Once again, the Big Ten conference winner was a bust in the Rose Bowl as Southern Cal had their way with the undermanned Penn State Nittany Lions.
The system is flawed in thinking that the six conferences that are guaranteed a slot in the BCS are superior conferences to other conferences. While I might believe the Southeast Conference and the Big 12 are pretty good conferences, the others are not. The Big East, the ACC, the Pac-10 and the Big 10 are all conferences that are, at best, average.
It is time for a true national champion. This indecision about guessing and posturing has got to go. With the argument that it would affect the bowl games, my answer is who cares. Right now, nobody cares about the Meineke Bowl or the Alamo Bowl or the San Diego Credit Union Bowl or any of the other bowl games if one does not have a tie to the school that is playing. Have the other bowl games, but come Christmas have a playoff with best teams in the country. It would only take a week longer than the current system and we will all be happy.
As Utah and Boise State have shown, all deserve a chance and all need to share in the money generated by a play-off system. It is time to take the control away from the big boys and share the money and this BCS fiasco is all about the money. Lets have a true national champion.
