Frank Montoya
PRICE/KEARNS – Frank Dean Montoya, age 41, passed away July 21, 2002 in Price.
He was born June 20, 1961 in Sunnyside, to Toribio (Toby) and Concha Pacheco Montoya. Married Linda Lee Mitchell March 23, 1994 in Draper.
Member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed going on family outings, camping and fishing. He liked to play baseball and football.
Survived by wife, Linda Montoya; children, Kristy and Brian Montoya, Kearns; mother, Concha Montoya, Price; brothers and sisters, Theresa (Ernesto) Avila, Wilmington, Calif.; Toby (Janet) Montoya, Paonia, Colo.; David Lee (Bernadette) Montoya, Paonia, Colo.; Stephanie (Humberto) Guerrero, Price; Ronald (Cindy) Montoya, Hotchkiss, Colo.; Cynthia (Richard) Marlowe, Wilmington, Calif.; 11 nephews, eight nieces, and one great nephew. Preceded in death by father, Toby; and brother Michael Montoya.
Funeral Mass Saturday, July 27, 10 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Vigil service Friday evening, 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Friday and Saturday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.
Leona Anderson
HELPER/FAYETTE – Leona Veloy Anderson, age 61, passed away July 15, 2002 in Price.
She was born Sept. 27, 1940 in Fayette, to Ernest and Burnice Thygerson Robinson. Married Alton J. Anderson April 23, 1959 in Fayette.
Leona was raised in Fayette, where she graduated from Gunnison Valley High School. She was a former resident of Salt Lake City, Castle Dale and Helper where she enjoyed her many wonderful friends over the years. Leona had a special love for her cats and will be dearly missed by all.
Survived by sister, Ruth (Verl) Keisel, Castle Dale; brothers-in-law, Dwayne Anderson, Ferron Anderson and Mike Anderson; and many loving nieces, nephews and a community of friends. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Emma; brother, Tom; and companion, Rick Smith.
Graveside service was Saturday, July 20, Levan Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home in Price.
Vivian Jacquez
PRICE – Jose Vivian “Tio” Jacquez, age 80, passed away July 18, 2002 in Price.
He was born Feb. 27, 1922 in Cuba, N.M. to Enriques and Regina Aragon Jacquez. Married Dominica Garduno Feb. 12, 1968 in Montrose, Colo. They later divorced.
Member of the Catholic Church. Vivian was a former employee of Union Carbide in La Sal, and a resident of Price since 1989. Vivian loved ranching and this was his pastime that he truly enjoyed. He was a devoted Jazz fan and will be dearly missed by his family and many dear friends.
Survived by sons, Frank Lujan, Price; Andrew Jacquez, Montrose, Colo.; daughter, Amy Jacquez, Montrose, Colo.; brothers, Isidor (Rose) Jacquez, Price; Albert Jacquez, Price; sister, Apolonia Sandoval, Price; numerous nieces and nephews who stayed by his side diligently prior to his death; and special nephew, Zachary (Americano); nine grandchildren, Ashley, Bradley, Derrick, Savanah, Alisha, Dominica Jordan, Brooke, Trever and Jade. He was preceded in death by parents; and sister, Albertina Sandoval.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Deloris “Lita” Quintana, for her many acts of kindness and care to “Tio”.

Arel Hunt
GREEN RIVER – Arel Max Hunt passed away in his home in Green River surrounded by his loved ones July 21, 2002.
Born Aug. 10, 1922 in Green River to Eva Hortense Johnson and Elias Franklin Hunt. He lived in Green River most of his life. Arel married his sweetheart, LaRue Seely Oct. 29, 1942 in Grand Junction, Colo., later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Arel did many things in his life which consisted of working on the railroad, the highway, in a service station, in the school district as a bus driver, janitor and he served on the school board for years. He also worked in the post office. Most of his life he was a barber and also spent several years as a judge. Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Arel always said that he held every position in the ward except Bishop and Relief Society President. He also served as Executive Secretary and Stake Clerk. His passion in life was golfing. Arel got the first hole-in-one on the Green River Golf Course, and the only one he ever made, on July 6, 1996. Arel worked at the golf course and he always made sure that all the golfers had cold ice water while playing. When his arm was twisted he would take grandma fishing. He also loved gardening and took great pride in his garden. He sold watermelons and loved visiting with the people. Arel spent his whole life serving his friends, family and neighbors.
Survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgia LaRue Seely Hunt; six children, Max Hunt, Wellington; Owen Hunt, Castle Dale; Russell Hunt, Sunnyside; Fern Garner, Clearfield; Lynn Hunt, Afton, Wyo.; Don Hunt, Clinton; 28 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 24, 11 a.m., at the Green River LDS Chapel. A viewing will be held Tuesday, July 23, 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and from 9:30-10:45 a.m., Wednesday at the church. Interment, Elgin Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Virgil Matthews
EAST CARBON/SALT LAKE CITY – Virgil Jesse Matthews, age 92, passed away peacefully July 14, 2002 at the Willowwood Care Center in Salt Lake City.
He was born May 10, 1910 in Wayne City, Ill., to David H. and Mary Etta Anderson Matthews. He married Mary Ellen Beggs Sept. 2, 1939 in Marion, Ill.
They left Illinois in 1943 and made their home in East Carbon.
Virgil served four years in the U.S. Navy as a first class seaman aboard the USS Lexington.
Virgil was a member of Carbon Lodge 16 F&AM, where he was a member of the York Rite, El Kalah Shrine and other Masonic affiliations.
He worked in the coal mines of Illinois and Utah for over 40 years and retired from U.S. Steel Western Division Coal/Horse Canyon mine in 1972.
The Dragerton Community Church baptized him in 1957.
Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a hard working man who enjoyed occasional shots of whiskey and a good cigar.
As grandchildren, we were privileged to have such a devoted grandfather who always had the time and wisdom to teach, guide and encourage us.
He is survived by son, William Matthews; grandson, Virgil A. (Marilyn) Matthews; granddaughter, Diane (Richard) Silva; great-grandson, Justin (Brenda) Matthews; great-granddaughters, Amanda (Matt) Montgomery; ShaNae (Scott) Stevens; and great-great-granddaughter, Leatha Ann Matthews. He was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 55 years; three sisters, Merle, Dolly and Irene; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Matthews.
Public Masonic service was July 19, 10 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Friday one hour prior to services. Friends are welcome at Mitchell’s daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Interment, Price City cemetery.
Linda Frances Flint
FERRON- Linda Frances Flint, beloved mother of Linda Allen Mills, passed away peacefully due to kidney failure on July 18, 2002. Born July 9, 1920 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Jesus and Esperanza Chaparro. Married Matthew Hayes and later divorced. Married William P. Flint in Las Vegas, Nev. He died July 3, 1996.
Linda was a loving mother to her two daughters and this love extended to her grandchildren. She enjoyed the outdoors and tending to her rose garden. Linda lived her life to the fullest and enjoyed living in Las Vegas.
Survived by daughter Linda (Mac) Mills, seven grandchildren and nine grandchildren who will miss her dearly. Preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Diane Guidici and three brothers.
Graveside service was held on July 22 at 10 a.m. at the Huntington City Cemetery. A viewing was held on July 21 from 6-7 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the “Enabling Garden” in her memory at the Emery County Care Center, P.O. Box 936, Ferron, UT 84523.
J. LaVerde Cannon Caldwell Rowley
HUNTINGTON- J. LaVerde Cannon Caldwell Rowley passed away suddenly on July 11 in Pagosa Springs, Colo. She was born on Feb. 15, 1934 in St. George to Ambrose and Annie Cannon. She married Pat E. Caldwell. He passed away in 1982. She later married Steven K. Rowley and lived in Huntington until her death.
She is survived by her husband, Steven; son, Curtis (Carla) Caldwell of Ferron; grandchildren; Jessica Caldwell of Ferron, Tiffany (Russell) Bloomer and Willie McCourt all of Fruita, Colo.; four great-grandchildren; sister, Carlotta Haren of Las Vegas, Nev.; mother-in-law, Sharleen Rowley of Huntington; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pat; son, Bill; two brothers and one sister.
Burial will be held at Ferron City Cemetery.
