HELPER-Our loving husband, dad, papa, and friend Tony O’Berto, returned to Our Loving Heavenly Father on Sept. 25, 2009 at his home in Helper just two days shy of his 84th birthday.
He was born Sept. 27, 1925 in Helper, Utah a son of Tony and Martha Marchello O’Berto. He graduated from Carbon High School in 1943 and later attended Carbon College. Served in the US Navy during World War II. Tony was a life long resident of Carbon County where he worked at Keller’s Market and later retired from Sears in Price as a sales associate.
Married Lorna Jane Roper on Feb. 19, 1966 in Spring Glen, Utah. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti LDS Temple on Aug. 6, 1996. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings.
Tony received many awards for volunteering in the local community. Lt. Gov. Olene Walker presented him with the Silver Bowl Service Award and was later recognized by Gen. Colin Powell for his efforts.
He dedicated more than 16 years with the children at Sally Mauro Elementary and was a big supporter of Helper Little League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family at the cabin. Tony was a member of several organizations including Price Jaycees, Elks Lodge, Utah Democratic Party, Carbon-Emery Fish and Game, and the Utah Wildlife Organization. He was a devoted BYU and Jazz fan.
Survived by his wife Lorna; daughter Terrie; son Rick; grandchildren, Greg (Karen), Jeremy (Brittany), Amy (Marc), ShaLay, Heather (JR), Rick Tony (Amanda), Jerrit (Bridi), Nelgian (Kacie); and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Ron (Pat) Roper, Dale (Mila) Roper and Janet O’Berto.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Kathryn and Minnie; brother John and his constant companion Buck.
Funeral service will be held at the Helper LDS Stake Center, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street in Price Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery in Helper with military honors accorded by the Price American Legion Post #3. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price where friends are welcome daily.
