PRICE-Frank Eugene Whipple, age 81, passed away peacefully Dec. 2, 2009 at his home after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Grants Pass, Ore. to Frank E. Whipple Sr. and Mary Jelesnianski. Having lost his mother after birth, Frank was raised by his grandmother and spent a significant part of his youth at the Consumers Coal Camp.
He attended Notre Dame and Carbon High School in Price, Utah. Frank also attended a private detective school in Seattle, Wash. and later took police science courses at the University of Washington.
In 1946, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served two years on the USS Pasadena. On July 21, 1956 he married the love of his life Pauline Winn in Helper, Utah and she died Jan. 9, 1976.
Frank served a distinguished 25 year career in law enforcement with the Utah Highway Patrol and retired as Lieutenant in 1979. He went on to serve as Public Safety Director for the College of Eastern Utah and as Justice Court Judge in Wellington for another 16 years.
Frank was one of Carbon County’s founding members and oldest charter member of the Search and Rescue serving for 40 years. He was also a member of Price Elk’s Lodge #1550.
Frank was an avid outdoorsman who spent countless hours fishing multiple waterways between Lake Powell and British Columbia.
He was a devoted father, grandfather, “PaPa” and adored by all of them. Frank made friends wherever he went and valued those relationships. He will be greatly missed.
Survived by his two sons and one daughter, Jeff (Annette) Whipple, North Pole, Alaska, Jan (Troy) Miller, Logan, Utah, John (Debbie) Whipple, Idaho Falls, Idaho; nine grandchildren, Brooke (Troy), Ryan (Lakyn), Derek (Ashley), Ben, Jenna, Michelle, Kelton, Jaron and Mary; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Ryder. He is also survived by four brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, numerous loving nieces and nephews, an entire community of friends and his beloved fishing buddies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Courtney; and great-grandson, Bailey.
Funeral service, was held Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street in Price. Family was at Mitchell’s Sunday evening from 5-7 p.m. and Monday morning from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment, Price City Cemetery, with honors accorded by the Utah Highway Patrol Honor Guard.
