On June 21, Volunteers of America, Utah – RSVP hosted its Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Castle Dale Senior Center. The National Anthem was sung by Shala
Pitchforh. Blessing on the food was offered by Wells Wakefield. Wells and Elizabeth Wakefield are RSVP volunteers from the museum. Miss Emery County,
Barbara Burke, sang a song entitled “I’ll Always Come Home.” She was then joined by her mother, Joan Burke, Shala Pitchforth and Laurie Pitchforth. They shared a song with the audience titled “I’ll Be.” The volunteers were then treated to two dance numbers from “The Get a Life” Line Dancers.
The guest speaker of the day was Jane Quist, Director of Senior Services for Volunteers of America, Utah. Volunteers of America, Utah sponsors the RSVP Program in Emery County. Jane spoke about the history of Volunteers of America. She also thanked the RSVP Volunteers and volunteer station supervisors for all they do in the community.
Jane also told about her exciting opportunity to meet First Lady, Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush was in Utah a few weeks ago speaking at the National Volunteer and Community Service Conference, where she talked about the importance of volunteering and about the commitment that both she and President Bush have to Senior Corps Volunteer Programs.
Laurie Pitchforth, who is Volunteers of America, Utah’s RSVP Director for Emery County spoke about the RSVP Program. When you volunteer for RSVP you actually become a member of a national organization that includes more than 450,000 volunteers. RSVP is designed to enhance other community service programs. RSVP is a resource that helps prove that the senior population is an active and vital part of our communities and our country. She thanked everyone for supporting her in building the RSVP program in Emery County.
She gave a special thank you to all the volunteers who step out of their comfort zones to volunteer and make a difference in someone’s life. She then gave each volunteer an RSVP umbrella as a thank-you gift. She encouraged the volunteers to use the umbrella as a sign of hope that rain will come to our area. Then there was a drawing for door prizes. Prizes were provided by Volunteers of America, Utah and some local merchants.
