WELLINGTON-Clifford Larry Boren, age 86 passed away May 22, 2010 after suffering a broken hip followed immediately by aspiration pneumonia. He had coped well for years with diabetes and COPD/Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Larry was born July 18,1923 to James Walter and Lucy Jane Herring Boren in White Rocks, Utah (Uintah Basin) but soon thereafter moved to Wellington and remained.
He was blessed and baptized into the LDS Church but became fascinated with studying the Bible thoroughly by subject and trusted numerous prophets, and was then baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church when he was 13 years old.
With only a ninth grade education he was considered very wise in many ways throughout his life.
In 1943 Larry volunteered and courageously served in the U.S. Army during World War II, getting his basic and specialized training at Camp Polk in Claiborne, La., and was stationed in England, France and Germany serving with the 3593rd Quartermaster Truck Company. He was authorized to wear the European Theatre Ribbon, The Good Conduct Medal, The American Theatre Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. Thanks to his praying mother, and our loving Heavenly Father, he miraculously escaped a bullet fired just four feet away, aimed directly at his face. He arrived home on Christmas Day for his first furlough and was Honorably Discharged as T-5 (Sergeant) on Dec. 18, 1945. Larry was always very content at home, never interested in traveling much after his tour of duty, rarely spoke about the war, and humbly shrugged off any honorable mention for serving our Country or any other admiration.
He married Mona Lee Hanna on Christmas Day 1947 and they celebrated 44 years of marriage while he was being an awesome care giver for his highly valued wife during her valiant battle with cancer. They lived briefly in Sunnyside before they bought his parent’s home in Wellington. Together they remodeled and faithfully maintained that home until their deaths.
Larry was a dedicated employee for 40 years with Kaiser Steel Corp. He was hired at the newly opened Sunnyside Coal Mine just before serving in the U.S. Army, then returned and became the Michigan Operator on the surface/bullgang, receiving company honors at various times and retired in 1984. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America, local #9958.
Larry always had a passion for nice cars, trucks and hats. He was gifted in mechanics and home maintenance and had a perfect driving record. He was still operating his own John Deere tractor. He was always peaceful, patient, persevering and self-controlled. He enjoyed camping, throwing horseshoes, hunting, fishing, country music, was an avid Utah Jazz fan during the Stockton and Malone days and began bowling after the loss of his wife.
He is survived by his daughter, Teena (T.J.) Jaramillo, and son, Larry Lee Boren, both of Wellington, Utah. Seven grandchildren: Duane (Maria), Leroy, Dustin, and Chayse Boren and Nicholas (Theresa), Desiree’ and Robbie Jaramillo; one great granddaughter, Macy Boren; with many “Bonus” grandchildren and great-grandchildren; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his devoted wife, Mona Lee (1991); and two sons, Russell (1994) and Kenny (1998), his parents, and both sisters, Norma Rhodes and Wilda Smith.
