After having gave away two region contests, or so it at least seemed, the Emery High baseball team was more determined than ever this week to not duplicate the result and boy were they successful. On Tuesday, Emery slammed Juab 16-2 behind Colter Moore’s pitching and then on Friday, Emery swept a doubleheader over the North Sanpete Hawks. Emery started the day with a 10-0 win with Bolotas doing the pitching for Emery and then won the nightcap 7-4 behind another good job by Moore.
In the game against Juab played at home, Juab scored twice in the top of the first inning as the three, four and five batters all got base hits and then Moore settled in and the Wasps never got another run and in fact never got another base hit in the game.
In Emery’s half of the first inning, Gage Bell started things off with a single. Bolotas followed with a single followed by Nevin Jensen and Moore walking and Nathan Mecham and Geren Payne singling. After Kashe Jewkes flew out for the first out of the inning, Nick Stoddard would then double followed by a single from Quinn Montgomery. Back to the top of the lineup would find Bell now hitting a double, Bolotas a single and Jensen a triple. All the runners would score and Emery led 11-2 after the first inning.
Emery added five more runs in the bottom of the second inning. After two Emery batters were out, Stoddard would walk and Montgomery would single. Back at the top again, Bell doubled again, Bolotas got another single and Jensen hit a single. Moore had the last base hit of the inning and as it turned out, of the game. Emery had 15 hits in the game with Bell and Bolotas having three apiece and every Emery batter having at least one.
In the first game of the doubleheader against North Sanpete, Emery was scoreless until the third inning. In that inning, Bell got on base due to an error. Bolotas then followed with a double and Jensen with a single. After Moore got out, Mecham and Payne singled and Jewkes walked. Stoddard was safe on another Hawk error and then Bell singled for Emery’s last hit of the inning.
Emery added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moore doubled, Mecham was safe due to another error, and Payne and Stoddard would both single. Emery had nine base hits in this game.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Emery was the visiting team on the scoreboard and I am sure that more than one person driving by was thrown off by the score showing. This was a make up game. Emery batted in the top of the first inning and scored a single run. Jensen walked and would eventually score after Moore got on base due to an error. Mecham and Payne also got on base in the inning but Emery could not score any other runs.
North Sanpete scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead at 2-1. In the top of the second inning, Emery would score three more times to reclaim the lead for good.
Stoddard opened the scoring with a homerun on a 1-0 pitch. After Bell walked, Bolotas added another homerun to score two runners. Emery added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bell singled this time and Bolotas hit another homerun to pick up four RBIs in the game. Jensen scored Emery’s last run. Jensen walked, Moore singled and Mecham and Payne walked to force home the run. Emery did play one other game last week as the Uintah Utes came to town. Emery lost that close game 9-8. Stoddard pitched this game. Emery scored once in the first, once in the second, once in the fifth and five times in the sixth inning. Emery finished with nine hits in the game. Bell hit a homerun, Montgomery had a triple and Moore hit a double.
In Emery’s lone region game on Friday the Delta Rabbits lost to the Emery Spartans because of a homerun off the bat of Braden Bolotas. In a game that went two extra innings, Emery defeated Delta 1-0 in a pitchers duel.
Ty Church, Delta’s pitcher, had a no-hitter going through 8 2/3 innings only to allow the Bolotas hit. Colter Moore, Emery’s pitcher, allowed only two singles in the game, one in the seventh inning and one in the ninth inning. Moore only threw 103 pitches in the nine-inning game. Emery defeated Gunnison on Monday in a make-up game for a snow out earlier in the season.
Emery now faces Richfield on the road this Tuesday. Emery has to defeat Richfield to grab a share of the region crown. State play-offs begin Saturday.
