PRICE – DeVon Venor “Speck” Oldroyd passed away on Aug. 19. He was born April 16, 1922 in Centerfield to Adrian Venor and Lola Nancy Nay Oldroyd. His married Rita Inez Robertson in Glenwood on Oct. 1, 1939.
DeVon loved Carbon County and never wanted to live anywhere else. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He was a coal miner all of his working life and loved to tell entertaining and lively stories about his youth, working in the mines and his adventures with his family and his many friends. “Speck”, as he was known by his coworkers and friends, loved to hunt, camp, fish, attend family functions and socialize with friends.
DeVon and Rita belonged to the Buckhorn Good Sam Club for more than 30 years and enjoyed many good friendships and camping adventures. If you were lucky enough to have known “Speck”, you know that he was charismatic, humorous, loving and sometimes gruff. But, if you knew him really well, you knew that the gruff was only on the outside.
DeVon is survived by his loving wife Rita (Price), children; Beverly (Gary) Hall, of Shalimar, Fla., Buddy Oldroyd, of Spring Glen, Barbara (Jim) Dresslar, of Moab, and Scott (Kelly) Oldroyd, of Kemmerer, Wyo., 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Arlene Terry and brother, Jay.
A special thanks to all of the loving and caring people at the Heirloom Inn and hospitals who cared for my husband, our Dad and our grandpa. We will miss him so much.
During the final days of his life he continued to sing “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” to his sweetheart.
Graveside services were held at the Spanish Valley Cemetery in Moab on Aug. 24. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
