PRICE – Don Clinton Johnson, age 85, passed away at his home with his beloved wife at his side on Aug. 21, 2010.
Don was born June 6, 1925 to Albert and Phyllis Bishop Johnson. On Feb. 1, 1948, he married Eunice Chidester, the love of his life. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
Don was a proud veteran of World War II. After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Carbon County and worked in several Castle Valley coal mines until retirement. He was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America.
Don was a hardworking, dedicated family man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren unconditionally. At the time of his death, he was excitedly awaiting the arrival of two more great-grandchildren. Although not overly demonstrative, he was a truly generous man who provided emotional and financial assistance without reservation.
Don possessed a keen sense of humor and an amazingly strong spirit. He brightened the world with his quick wit and cheated death on numerous occasions with unwavering determination. He refused to succumb to physical weakness until he could leave his earthly existence behind on his terms-at home with his wife and family nearby.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Eunice Johnson of Price, along with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who filled his life with joy until the end. The survivors who will miss him deeply include Lynnda Johnson; Donni, Jens, Elizabeth, Kathryn and MacKenzie Nielson; Jaimi Hillman; Larry and Susie Johnson; Tracee, Jeremy, Ainsley and Zackary Thornton. Klint, Janet, Liberty and Charlotte Johnson; Courtney, Shiloh, Kinsey, Ella and Court Johnson; Kimber and Eric Christensen; Sherrie, Gabe and Christopher Vlamakis; Kelly Johnson-Dunn; BrookLyn, Ted, Shayley and Nicholas Cartwright; Joseph and Kelly Dunn; Esther and Larry Marinoni; and Pam, Rick, Lyndsie, Parker, William and Kaytlin Davis. He is also survived by a special nephew, Norris Wiseman. He mourned the loss of four beloved grandsons, Stephen Vlamakis, Brady Davis and Christopher and Nicholas Dunn. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, one sister and three brothers.
A viewing is planned Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, located at 233 East Main in Price. Don’s funeral is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at 10 a.m., at the Price Third LDS Ward Chapel, 303 West 500 South. The family will be at the church Saturday one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Cliffview Cemetery in Price. Friends are welcome at Mitchell Funeral Home daily and may share online memories of Don at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
Without the medical expertise of Dr. David Nichols, the family would have been robbed of precious time and lost Don years ago. He sincerely appreciated the care and consideration provided by nursing and medical staffs during his stays at Castleview Hospital and Parkdale. The family members are also grateful to Rocky Mountain Hospice for enabling them to grant Papa Don’s wish to spend his last days at his home.
