New Tie-Fork rest area on SR-6 opens

The Utah Department of Transportation opened a new rest area on U.S. Highway 6 between Spanish Fork and Price on Aug. 16 at noon.
The new rest area is located nine miles west of Soldiers Summit and about two miles east of a new bridge structure at milepost 200.
The grand opening event of the new rest area was highlighted by a rail cutting ceremony to pay tribute to the areas rich railroad history.
Speakers included:Bevan Wilson, Utah Transportation Commissioner State Sen. David Hinkins State Rep. Christine Watkins and John Njord, UDOT Executive Director.
UDOT has completed 56 improvement projects on U.S. Highway 6 during the last decade with a combined budget of $239 million. All completed projects have addressed the areas transportation needs including roadway widening, capacity improvements and safety improvements.
U.S. Highway 6 between Spanish Fork and Interstate 70 includes 130 miles of highway and is one of Utah’s primary arteries for energy, commerce and tourism. In 2007, 32 percent of the vehicles on U.S. 6 traveling over Soldier Summit were trucks.
The new Tie Fork Rest Area is designed to replace the former Tucker Rest Area which was removed when U.S. 6 was realigned to improve safety. Building the new rest area was essential to maintaining services in the corridor.
