The Emery High swim team has started their second season of existence and last week hosted their first competition of the year with a dual meet against the Carbon Dinos. The Carbon boys won 106-58 and the Carbon girls won 113-45.
If one just looks at the team scores, one would have a different opinion than if one considered the facts. Fact one, this is Emery’s second season and the Spartans do not have a lot of veteran swimmers on the team that have been swimming for years.
Fact two, the score reflects the fact that swimmers are limited to the number of races they can enter and Emery just does not have enough participants on the team that can compete in every event. The team size really needs to double in order to probably have more competitive team scores.
Individually, Emery is making progress as the team member’s times have improved over last season and they are competitive in a number of races.
Eli Oliverson won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.19 improving his time by .7 of a second. Eli also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.72. This time was two seconds faster than his seeded time and almost eight seconds faster than the second place swimmer.
Tyler Rowley also won a pair of races for Emery. Tyler won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:11.96, almost five seconds faster than his seeded time and 41 seconds faster than second place. Tyler also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:11.72, almost eight seconds faster than the second place swimmer.
Weston Allinson was Emery’s other winner on the day. Weston won the 200-yard IM, an individual medley race, with a time of 2:42.21. Weston finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:19.71. He lost the race by just more than a second.
Emery’s boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rowley, Allinson, Connor Benson and Oliverson won the race with a time of 4:18.37, besting their previous best by four seconds. Emery’s boys 200-yard relay team consisting of the same swimmers finished second.
Also placing for the Emery boys were Benson in the 200-yard freestyle in fourth place, Spencer Fauver in the 50-yard freestyle in fourth place and fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle, Justan Potter finished fifth place in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Ashlin Daley’s two second place finishes led the Emery High girl’s team. Ashlin finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:12.18, in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:28.06. Ashlin was also a member of two relay teams that also finished second.
Mia Doria finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.62 and Brinne Dawes finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:32.53.
Also placing for the girls were Dawes in the 200-yard freestyle in third place and Tanner Peterson in fifth place. Hailee Rogers was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, Judy Boyer was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, Tennyson Fauver, Jessica Guymon and Mia Doria finished second, third and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Emery girls 200-yard medley relay team of Daley, Fauver, Dawes and Doria finished second as did the 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Dawes, Daley, Peterson and Rogers. The 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Doria, Boyer, Shantel Sitterud and Guymon finished third.
Emery’s next home meet is Dec. 1 against Delta.
