As the Green River Pirate Track team looked out the bus window, the students didn’t like what they saw. As the bus traveled along I-70, snow was beginning to cover the freeway and the surrounding hillsides. They were heading to the Matt Burr Invitational Track meet at North Sevier High School and didn’t much feel like running in the snow.
As it turned out, they didn’t have to run in the snow and for the most part it was a beautiful day, both in weather and in results for the student athletes. A couple of the bright spots were the third place finish by Freshman Jamie Johnson who jumped to a height of 4′ 8″; a seventh place finish by Megan Hatt in the long jump with a distance of 14′ 8.5″; a sixth place finish by Jason Johnson in the shot put with a distance of 37′ 3.75″; an eighth place finish by Richard Wilson in the long jump with a jump of 18′ 7″ and a first place finish by Sarah Swalberg in the javelin with a throw of 113′.
Other track members competed in their individual events and most improved significantly on their earlier marks. Dallice Johnson jumped to her best jump of 12′ 11″ while Melissa Antillion jumped 12′ 1″ and Kelsee Robertson jumped 11′ 5″ and Danielle Monroe jumped 10′ 9.5″.
Justin Johnson tried his hand at high jumping and jumped to a height of 5′ 2″ while Richard Wilson threw the javelin 118′ 8″ and Keith Clark threw the discus 83’1″ and the shot to a distance of 31′ 1.5″ while Caleb White put the put 23′ 1.25″.
The Lady Pirates on the team improved on their speed in the 100M as Jamie Johnson posted a 14.86 and Melissa Antillion ran it in 15.18 while Dallice Johnson did it in 15.65 and Corrinne Hansen made it in 15.83
