Emery downs Canyon View and Carbon

On the Friday before Labor Day weekend, Emery hosted the Canyon View Falcons in a preseason football game and sent the visitors home with a 42-13 defeat. The win left the Spartans with a 2-1 season record. The Spartans, after thoroughly dominating the entire game, were tied with the Falcons at the half at 13-13 but Emery used a big second half to grab the win.
Emery picked up more than 500 yards of offense in the game while holding the Falcons to 196 yards of offense. Take away the two scoring drives of the Falcons and they were held to 52 yards of offense in eight possessions the rest of the game.
In the game, Emery had 10 offensive possessions with six of those ending in touchdowns. The other four possessions all ended inside Falcon territory after the Spartans had a first and ten inside the 15-yard line. One possession ended on downs, one ended on a bad snap on a field goal attempt, one ended on a fumble and the last ended as time ran out and Emery took a knee to run out the clock.
Emery was led by their running attack but assisted well by an efficient passing attack. Taylor Cox led the Spartans in rushing for the third straight week, this time with 206 yards on 14 carries. Cox scored on a 78-yard run for his only touchdown. This play was the first play of the second half.
Colton Fasselin also rushed the ball 14 times and Fasselin picked up 114 yards and a touchdown. Fullback Jade Fielder ran the ball eight times for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Cody Jones scored on a quarterback sneak plus completed a pass to Kashe Potter for a touchdown and a pass to Nick Stoddard at the three yard line that was caught and fumbled and then recovered by Quinn Montgomery in the end zone for a touchdown.
Emery’s touchdown drives were 65 yards, 84 yards, 78 yards, 43 yards, 69 yards and 28 yards. On defense, Emery was led by their linebacker foursome. Jesse Winn led the way with nine tackles, Nathan Mecham had eight tackles, Clay Collard had six tackles and Fasselin ended the game with six tackles.
Emery 53 Carbon 6
Last Friday night, the Emery Spartans hosted Carbon High in another preseason football game and the Spartans came away the winner 53-6. With the win, Emery’s season record is now 3-1.
Emery and Carbon played to a first quarter draw as neither team was able to be effective on offense and the team’s defense stifled their opponent. Penalties were a big factor in the quarter as several times Emery had big plays but they were nullified by penalties.
Everything went Emery’s way after that first quarter though. After netting only 19 yards in their first two series, due in part to those penalties, the Spartans scored on every other possession in the ball game and Emery’s defense limited the Dino’s to a single touchdown.
Emery scored on seven straight offensive possessions and racked up 420 yards of offense in the game. The three starting running backs accounted for more than 300 of those yards. Taylor Cox continued his impressive running this season with 16 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Fasselin rushed for 69 yards on 10 carries and Fasselin also scored two touchdowns. Jade Fielder carried the ball seven times for 41 yards.
Emery’s defense was equally impressive throughout the ball game. The Dinos were limited to 96 yards of offense on the night. Emery’s Kashe Potter intercepted a Dino pass and returned it for a touchdown and Emery’s Nathan Mecham blocked a Dino punt, which led to another touchdown. Jacob Tuttle led the Spartans with 10 tackles on the night. Emery’s first touchdown drive went 95 yards. Fasselin ran once for five yards, Fielder ran twice for 17 yards and Cox ran five times for 71 yards and the score. The second scoring drive went for 40 yards. Fielder ran once for 11 yards, Cox once for 14 yards and Fasselin once for 15 yards and the score.
Emery’s next drive went for 80 yards and Nick Stoddard scored on a Cody Jones pass from 31 yards out. Cox carried the ball three times for 47 yards in the drive. Emery then scored on a 65-yard drive with Cox scoring from one yard out. The next drive was for eight yards, this after the blocked punt, and Fasselin scored.
The last two drives were for 76 yards and 37 yards and both drives ended with Jesse Winn scoring. The first was a 10-yard run and the second was a two yard run.
Emery now will host Union High this Friday night in their homecoming contest. Game time is 7 p.m.
