At this year’s Relay for Life to be held at Emery High School on June 11-12, one group of walkers/runners will be supporting Mistie (Nielsen) Myers who is currently battling breast cancer. Mistie is a native of Emery County, and she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in May, 2010. Her first diagnosis of breast cancer was in 2005. At that time she began her battle to combat the disease and was given chemotherapy. A complication arose from her treatment, and muscle cells began to die. She was life-flighted to LDS Hospital for treatment and given about a 50 percent chance of surviving. The treatments included using the hyperbaric chamber to saturate her body with oxygen. Also, incisions were made to cut out infected muscle.
Mistie proved to be very brave and fought through all of the treatments, surviving the Necrotizing Fasciitis. After this battle, Mistie still had to deal with her cancer and resume the chemotherapy treatments.
None of this was easy for Mistie, but she was able to come out on top in her battle with cancer which was declared to be in remission. Mistie was cancer free for about five years until the most recent diagnosis. Mistie is married to Russ Myers, a native of Huntington. They have two sons ages 7 and 9. Anyone wishing to show support for Mistie and her family and anyone else suffering from cancer is invited to join the Relay for Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The event begins Friday, June 11, at 6 p.m. and will go until 6 a.m. on Saturday. All activities will be at the Emery High School track.
While at the Relay for Life, stop by the “Team Mistie” tent on the football field and write her and her family a note of support and encouragement. Mistie and the Myers family will receive a scrapbook of the event with pictures and notes from all of those who came in her support. For more on Mistie, go to www.mistiemyers.blogspot.com.
