Lavisa Kelley
HELPER/CARBON COUNTY – Lavisa Jane Kibler Kelley, age 97, passed away Feb. 7, 2002 at Castleview Hospital, Price.
She was born June 30, 1904 in Rose Hill, Jasper County, Ill., to Charles and Isabel Davis Kibler. Married John H. Kelley Dec. 22, 1928 in Chicago, Ill. He died May 27, 1963.
Lavisa was a devoted member of the Price United Methodist Church and during past years accompanied the church choir with the organ and piano.
She and her husband, John H. Kelley, moved to Utah from Chicago during the 1930s and worked and resided in various mine camps: Ophir, Colorado; Ophir, Wattis and Clear Creek. They moved to Helper after World War II. John opened his own business, Kelley’s Lock & Tool, on Main Street and Lavisa continued to teach school. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Illinois. She taught at Scofield Elementary, Raines Elementary, Helper Central Elementary and Sally Mauro Elementary. At Raines Elementary, she taught four grades and was the principal. She was especially pleased with her operettas.
Lavisa will also be remembered for all of the tutoring and music lessons she gave over many years. In later life, her students were always part of her memories. After retirement from teaching, she devoted her time to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and those whose life she touched. Graduate of the University of Utah in August 1958 with honors, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Sorosis Club. She was also a member of local women’s organizations and bridge clubs.
Survived by sister, Evelyn Helton, Ill.; two sons, Don (Judy) Kelley, Price; Robert Kelley, Alabama; daughter, Marjean (Norm) Hansen; Spring Glen; special nephew, John Asher, Replogle, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, Alyssa, who was born Feb. 5, 2002. She has many nephews and nieces in Illinois, who meant the world to her. Her grandchildren were her devotion and will remain her legacy, Donnie (Karla) Kelley, Fredricksburg, Va.; Mike (Paula) Kelley, Moab; Annette (Scott) Henrie, Carbonville; John (Michele) Kelley, Price; Arlene (Ralph) Winn, Springville; Davin Kelley, Price; Bobby John Davini, Alabama; and Lynn Davini, Florida. She was preceded in death by husband, John; and sister, Cleda Replogle, Illinois.
She will be remembered for her homemade bread, chicken noodle soup, cherry trees, Lawrence Welk, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, soap operas, her love of sports and her undying love for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her newly born great-great-grandchild. We love you, great-grandma.
Funeral service Thursday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m., Price United Methodist Church. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Price City cemetery.

James Gravley
FERRON – James Noah Gravley, age 74, passed away Feb. 9, 2002 at his home in Ferron.
He was born Dec. 18, 1927 in Dott, W.V., to Robert Lee and Addie Melinda Goad Gravley. He married Mary Jo Oresta Sept. 4, 1948 in Sparta, N.C., later solemnized in the Mesa LDS Temple Feb. 16, 1965.
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served in numerous callings. Noah worked all his life in mining, beginning in West Virgina and retiring from Emery Mining in 1983 after 35 years.
He always had a large garden, where he spent many happy hours. When he could, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. His greatest love in his twilight years was genealogy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, Ferron; six children, Linda and Robert Bell; Mike and Renee Gravley, all of Long Beach, Calif.; Steve and Deanna Gravley, Ferron; Mary Beth and Dan Rodriguez, Whittier, Calif.; Nathan and Monique Gravley, Price; Jennifer Gravley, Taylorsville; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Wilma McKinney, Rock, W.V.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m., at the Ferron LDS Stake Center. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ferron Cemetery.
George Bryner
PRICE – Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandpa and friend, George Albert Bryner, age 78, passed away Feb. 5, 2002 in Price.
He was born Oct. 6, 1923 in Helper to James Levi and Ethel Annie Larsen Bryner. He was married on Sept. 23, 1957 to Merle Christensen in Elko, Nev.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and taking care of his horse, dog and sheep on the farm. He especially loved the outdoors and nature.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife, Merle, Helper; four daughters, Linda (Leon) Olsen, Sandy; Gwen (Ken) Callahan, Price; Carol (Lyle) Jones, Price; Karen (Floyd) Swasey, Spring City; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Rex Bryner, Salt Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Bryner; a sister, LaVon Sidwell; and a brother, James Bryner.
A service was conducted Friday, Feb. 8, at Fausett Mortuary Chapel. Interment followed in the Price City Cemetery.
Millie Burdis
PRICE/CALIFORNIA – Millie Ruby Reetz Burdis left this life Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in South Gate, Calif., due to a long illness.
She was born June 25, 1915 in Morgan, Minn., to Fredrick and Ana Reetz. When Millie was 2 years old, her father, Fredrick, passed away, leaving Ana to raise her three children, including brother, Marvin and sister, Onie. In 1945, Millie left Minnesota to work in California and met handsome Sam Burdis. They were married June 25, 1947 and continued to live and work in California.
Millie worked as a new accounts administrator for 41 years for the Bank of Security Pacific, which became Bank of America in 1992. She loved her job and all of the friends she met there.
She loved life and enjoyed all the experiences she and Sam shared.
Millie is survived by husband, Sam Burdis; brother-in-law, Gus (Dorothy) Burdis; sister-in-law, Norma Burdis; nieces and nephews, Rosemary Kappes, Annette Johnson, Frank Burdis, Paul Burdis, Diane Burdis, Marianne Burdis Colahan and their families. All of Millie’s family preceded her in death.
Funeral service Thursday, Feb. 14, 2 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday one hour prior to services. Friends are welcome at Mitchell Funeral Home daily. Interment, Price City cemetery.
Reva Hunter
FERRON – Reva Henrie Fund Holland Hunter, age 92, passed away Feb. 9, 2002 in Price.
She was born June 17, 1909 in Ferron to Ephraim and Sarah Jane Hancock Henrie. She married Bruce E. Funk June 25, 1928, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. He died in 1950. She later married Edward Holland. After his passing she married Albert Hunter who also preceded her in death.
She found joy in decorating her home, gardening, painting and sewing. Being active in the LDS Church, she served in numerous callings including her mission to the Florida, Tallahassee Mission.
She is survived by daughters, Janice Fe ( John) Ciarus, and Doris Lindsey, all of Ferron; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by three husbands; three sons, Everett, Dean and Jerry; and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2 p.m., in the old Ferron LDS Chapel, where friends may call from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Ferron Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Charles “Chuck” Marrelli
PRICE – Charles Marrelli, age 73, died Feb. 10, 2002 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
He was born May 3, 1928 in Helper to Guiseppe and Elizabeth Siletta Marrelli. Married Molly McInally Sept. 4, 1954 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church.
Member of Notre Dame Catholic Church. Retired member of the United Mine Workers of America. Honorary life member of Price Elks Lodge 1550. Served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Member of the Price American Legion Post 3.
Chuck’s love of cooking was shared with many in his two restaurants and at home.
Survived by wife, Molly Marrelli, Price; daughter, Debbie Prichard, Price; son, Denis Marrelli, Price; son, Joe (Vicky) Marrelli, Salt Lake City; brother, Frank (Margaret) Marrelli, Helper; sister, Til Davido, Price; sister, Stella Gigliotti, Helper; brother, Rudy (Jennie) Felice, Price; brother, Ernie Felice, Price; four grandchildren, Mike and Moira Prichard, Alison and Denelle Marrelli, all of Price; brothers-in-law, Tom, Jack and Pat McInally, California; and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; son-in-law, Norm Prichard; brothers-in-law, Ross Gigliotti; and Oscar Davido; niece, Alane Davido.
Memorial Mass Tuesday, Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m., Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Family will be at the church Tuesday, 6 p.m. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.

Jerry Eyman
FERRON – Jerry Lee Eyman, age 68, resident of Ferron, passed away in Price on Feb. 9, 2002.
He was born Aug. 18, 1933 in Wichita, Kan. to Floyd and Helen Eyman. He married Marie Henre and later divorced. He then married Shirly Ann (Penny) Skougard Nov. 19, 1960 and later divorced.
He moved to Cedar City and was a 1959 graduate of Cedar High School where he played football. He later went to work for his father as a truck driver. He was a life member of the Elks lodge and served for the Cedar City volunteer fire dept. And later the Ferron volunteer fire dept. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by children, Shellie Ann Hendrickson, Hurricane; Tony (Rhonda) Eyman, Moab; Tracy (Michele) Eyman, Hurricane; eight grandchildren, Dixie Ann, Ryan, Britnie, Jerri Lynn, Brandson, Jessica Meg, Bobbie Lynn and T.J. Also ten great-grandchildren, Kristina, Brandon, Kameron, Takota, Morgan, Teya, Jordan, Jonah and Taz. He was preceded in death by parents; and son, Larry Lee.
A memorial service will be Friday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m., at Fausett Mortuary Chapel in Castle Dale. A memorial service will also be in the Cedar City Elks Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Cedar City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Shriners Children Hospital in his memory.
Marlene Shryock
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Marlene Hill Shryock of Newport Beach, Calif., died Feb. 7, 2002 in Newport Beach, Calif., due to complications from cancer.
Marlene was born Sept. 14, 1928 in Wellington to Rufford Wade and Ella Shimmin Hill. On July 4, 1955 she married Henry C. Coburn, later divorced. They had one child, Henry Christopher, born July 17, 1956. On Feb. 14, 1987 Marlene married Clifton Shryock Jr. in Lake Tahoe, Nev. They made their home in Newport Beach, Calif. She and Clif traveled extensively while Clif served as a judge at national and international Chow breed dog competition shows.
Marlene graduated from Burbank High School and attended Barbazon School of Modeling and later attended the RN School of Fashion Design in New York City. Her greatest joys in life came from her son, Chris, her family, church and friends. She was active in the LDS Church and enjoyed art and social activities.
She is survived by son, Henry Christopher (Sandra), Costa Mesa, Calif. She was preceded in death by beloved husband, Clifton Shryock; brother, Gary Norman Sayre; and parents. Marlene will be missed by family, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services Wednesday, Feb. 13, 11 a.m., at the Newport Beach LDS Ward Chapel, Calif. Graveside services will be Saturday, Feb. 16, noon, at the Price City Cemetery. Nellie Smith
PRICE – Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Nellie Smith, went home to her Heavenly Father Feb. 9, 2002 at the age of 91.
She was born Dec. 6, 1910 in Olathe, Colo., to Burton Jackson and Florence Wiggett Prettyman. She married Clarence Smith on Nov. 5, 1926 in Price. He passed away May 7, 1966.
She lived most of her life in the Price area. She worked for the laundromat, Green Thumb and several years for the Price senior citizens center.
She was a very active member of the LDS Church.
She was very witty, fun and wise, maintaining that keen mind up to the time she died. She got along with everyone she met. She would always sacrifice the things she needed for the needs of her family and friends. She faced many trials and tribulations in her lifetime. But with faith in the Lord and her religion, she faced each one bravely.
We love you, Mama , and now you are home with the Lord and all your family.
She is survived by her three children, Don Smith, Price; Darlene and Danny Coleman, Price; Carol and William Leverton, Cleveland. She was a special grandmother and great-grandmother, with 20 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sons, two daughters and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the Price 11th LDS Ward Chapel. The family will be at the church one hour prior to greet friends. Interment will follow in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Joseph Perla
PRICE/VENTURA, Calif. – Joseph Rudolph Perla, age 72, died Feb. 7, 2002 in California.
He was born Dec. 4, 1929 in Aspen, Colo., to John and Amelia Miljavac Perla. Married Dolores Reay Feb. 7, 1953, Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. She died Oct. 9, 1957. Married Patricia Marshall Aug. 4, 1968.
Member of the Catholic Church. Former resident of Carbon County where he was employed with Kaiser Coal at Sunnyside. Later employed with Vetco Corporation in California for 15 years. Served U.S. Army during Korean Conflict.
Survived by wife, Patricia Perla, Ventura, Calif.; stepson, Craig Bonner; stepdaughter, Mary Lynch; sisters, Ann Peczuh, Carbonville; Rose Koran, Carbonville; Eva Perla, Price; and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
