Feb. 2 was a very eventful day at Canyon View Junior High School. It was filled with learning opportunities for seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. Ninth graders went to Reality Town in the school’s gym. Ryan Hepworth talked to the students beforehand about Reality Town and how to be successful. He also told them their jobs dependent on their grade point average. The ninth graders got a checkbook and a handbook that told them about Reality Town. They went to different stations for all the things they needed to support a family. This learning experience taught them how much life really costs and what they should be expected to do. Some of the stations they visited in Reality Town included purchasing a home, purchasing a car, health insurance, dental insurance, groceries, banking, pet shop, communications, kiddy corner(child care), personal care, home improvement, military recruitment, property taxes, utilities, “Just My Luck”(lifes unexpected bumps), and transportation.
The eighth graders went to career day. People came from Emery County ambulance, physical therapy, Fausett’s Mortuary, Nielson Construction, the sheriff’s office, Oliver and Sitterud attorneys, and Doug Johnson taught them about computer technology. They talked with the eighth graders about what they do and how to get the same careers as them. The eighth graders switched from class to class learning abut the different occupations.
Seventh graders turned in applications to job shadow a person in an occupation they would like to go into. They went to job shadow the person for the whole school day to find out about the work they do.
