The Emery High Lady Spartans finished the region season with two more victories last week and grabbed a share of the region 12 basketball crown. The Spartan team went on the road for the two games and did a rare thing as they defeated Richfield at Richfield 62-61 and then blew out North Sanpete 62-34.
With the win, Emery and Delta finished tied at 8-2 in region 12 this season. Juab finished 7-2 and Richfield finished 5-5. North Sanpete was 2-8 and Manti was 0-10. Emery lost the coin flip and will go into the 3-A state tournament as the second seed from region 12 and will host Wasatch this Saturday night. Wasatch finished 6-12 for the season and fourth in their region.
Emery finished the season at 14-6 with the six losses all coming against teams that were ranked or had been ranked during the season. Emery lost two close games to Carbon High who finished the season ranked number one. They also lost games to Cedar and Canyon View who battled to the end for the region 9 title and both finished the season ranked in the top five.Emery’s other two losses came against their region opponents who had been ranked number 1 and number 2 during the season. It was not a soft schedule.
Carbon won region 10 and is the top ranked team with a 16-1 record. Canyon View is 15-4 and Cedar is 15-6 and those two lead region 9, with wins over the three 4-A teams in the region. Morgan leads their region with an 18-3 record. Region 12 has four teams that could do well in the play-offs.
No team goes to Richfield and defeats the Wildcats very often but Emery pulled off the victory by playing good team basketball. Taylor Mann had a good night as she scored 24 points to lead Emery.
Blayr Jeffs, shooting the ball well as of late, hit four 3-pointers in the game and ended the night with 17 points. Tayler Jewkes hit three 3-pointers and ended the night with nine points.
Brooke Jensen scored seven points, Jessica Murray scored three points and Jeridi Price scored two points. Emery had seven 3-pointers in the game while Richfield had five. Both teams shot poorly at the free throw line in the game as Emery was nine for 18 and Richfield was 10 for 20. Fifty percent shooting is not what either team wanted in a close game like this.
Against North Sanpete, Emery jumped to 8-0 start and then never really looked back in this game. Emery won the first period 21-8 and the second period 15-6 to lead 36-14 at the half. Emery scored the first five points of the third quarter to lead 41-14 before they cruised to the easy region win.
Taylor Mann led the team again in scoring, this time with 21 points. All of Mann’s points came in the first half. Mann had 11 points in the first quarter on three baskets and five for five shooting at the free throw line. Mann scored 10 points in the second quarter on four field goals and two for three at the free throw line. Mann also had 10 rebounds and three steals in the game.
Brooke Jensen scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in the game. Blayr Jeffs scored 10 points. Jessica Murray scored six points and had four steals to lead the team. Also scoring was Kim Oldroyd with six points, Whitney Roper with three points and Tayler Jewkes, Jeridi Price and Shailee stokes with two points each. Jewkes led the team with five assists.
The Wasatch first round state play off game will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Spartan Center with no sophomore or JV games that night.
