The residents of Huntington responded to the call for action to flush out cancer from their community. At least 14 residents of the Huntington/Lawrence area are fighting cancer at this time. Huntington residents saw a need to help these cancer victims with related medical expenses incurred in battling this disease.
Many activities were planned and some will take place later in the summer.
To start the fundraising efforts Cheryl Ungerman organized a Zumba-thon. The popular Latin dance exercise enthusiasts gathered at the Canyon View Junior High and danced the morning away.
The following Saturday morning began with a 5k run or walk. Activities continued throughout the day with a bake sale, yard sale, BBQ pork dinner and an auction. Many businesses and individuals donated items for the auction.
The Huntington Youth council lent their efforts to the cause by selling pizzas from BKs and doughnuts. In October a fundraiser golf tournament will be hosted at the Millsite Golf Course.
One of the event organizers RuthAnn Ekker said, “We really did good. The people who came out to support us were very generous. We will have bake sales throughout the summer and a golf tourney. A concert is being planned at the park pavilion by the school on July 16. We also hope to do something in conjunction with Heritage Days. A skeet shoot and a poker ride are also future events. We are so appreciative of everyone who came and helped and donated. The people were very generous in their donations of yard sale items. We really appreciate what’s been done and hope to accomplish more for these people in need.”
