1918-2011
PRICE-Marie Durand Lott, age 93, passed away peacefully Aug. 12, 2011 in Price.
She was born in Rolap, Utah on March 26, 1918 to Louis and Louise Caffaretti Durand.
Marie’s remarkable life began in the coal camps of Carbon County, Utah. Her parents were Northern Italian immigrants who had come to America in search of a better life. When Marie was 4, the family moved to a farm near Cleveland, Utah where Marie and her siblings spent their happy childhood. They worked hard and loved each other very much. Marie’s passion for good food and family gatherings, laughter and fun was nurtured on the farm.
After high school, Marie and two friends moved to Price to the apartment above the Crown Theatre where she worked at the Fla Cille Dress Shop on the same street. On Aug. 12, 1944, she married Jex Gardner Lott, of Huntington, and they lived in Florida for a time while Jex was in military service. They returned to Price and started their family. Jex was a grocery store manager and they moved several times to communities in Utah and Idaho before returning to Price to stay in 1958. They bought a home on 1000 East and Marie remained there until a few weeks before her death.
Marie’s devotion to her family and friends was the focus of her life. Foster and Kandice knew that they would always receive unconditional love from their mother. She was always there for them for sports events, dance and music performances and family milestones.
Marie was a member of the LDS Church, and had a strong moral compass which never failed her. She made many friends in the dance community when Kandice was teaching ballet. She was very glad that her five grandchildren lived close by and also enjoyed her great-grandchildren’s activities in her later years. Marie devoted much of her time to child care for family members, neighbors and friends. Many young people were influenced by her fine example. She loved flowers, gardening and all animals, especially her horse Rosie and her cat, Happy Tucker. She remained close to her brothers and sister and her husband’s family. Marie began every day with a phone call to her sister Isabel, talking about the “kids” and giving each other medical advice. We will all miss her very much.
Marie is survived by her daughter and son, Kandice (Gordon) Olson, Foster (Terri) Lott, both of Price; sister, Isabel Oveson, Huntington; grandchildren, Michael Olson, Logan, Richard Olson, Bellingham, Wash., Jennifer K. Lopez, Carbonville, Jayme F. (Megan) Lott, St. George, Jeremy Jex (Aubrey) Lott, Price; eight great-grandchildren, Felicia, Elizabeth, Brooklyn, Clayton, Brynlee, Easton, Brigham and Kaisha.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jex on March 1, 1996; brothers, Emery Durand and Fred Durand.
