The Pirates traveled to the UVU campus in Orem on Oct. 28 and 29. It was the first time that the Green River volleyball squad had earned a place in the tournament in four years. The Pirates came out a little hesitant in their first match with Concordia Prep, but soon found their stride and rallied to win the match in four sets. Coach Simmons and Coach Brady were able to settle the girls in to win 18-25, 25-23, 25-20, and 25-15. It was a very satisfying win with all team members contributing. Megan Hatt ended the game with a very good line of 12 kills, five assists and three aces. Jamie Johnson also recorded 12 kills and four aces. Michaela Hughes knocked down nine kills, four blocks and two aces. Dallice Johnson set her way to 21 assists. Sydney Thayn tallied two kills, three assists and three aces, while Feliesha Antillion recorded two assists and two aces. This was a total team effort.
Next the Pirates were to face perennial power, the Rich Rebels. The Pirates struggled to get anything going until the third set, where they looked very good. It was too late though and Green River fell to the Rebels, 8-25, 5-25, 22-25. Hatt ended the game with five kills and three assists, J. Johnson five kills, Hughes four kills and twoaces, D. Johnson nine assists in a game where offense was hard to come by.
On Saturday the Pirates were to face last year’s state champs the Panguitch Bobcats. The Pirates worked hard and fought a good fight but came up short, losing in three sets, 16-25, 22-25, 20-25. J. Johnson recorded 11 kills in the match followed but Hughes with 10 kills and three aces. Hatt tallied four kills, two assists and one ace. Thayn recorded two kills and an ace and D. Johnson put up 16 assists.
The Pirates were able to get their first state appearance in four years and their best state performance in many years.
Congratulations to the entire volleyball squad.
