CARBONVILLE-Our devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all, Leola Mae Byrge Callor, age 90, passed away April 5, 2011 at the Beehive Home in Price.
She was born Sept. 1, 1920 in Hima, Ky. to W.R. “Bill” Byrge and Florida McCloud. Leola was one of the oldest of 12 children and she learned mothering at an early age. She had a hand in raising her younger brothers and sisters and was the last surviving member of the Byrge family. Although she was born in Kentucky, she spent her childhood in Eastern Tennessee where years later she earned the nickname of “Tennessee.”
Leola graduated from Nashville General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. After graduating third in her class, she moved to Utah where she met and married her love Americo “Rico” Callor. On Sept. 5, 1946, she married “Rico”in Helper, Utah and they had two children Ricky and Dougie. While residing in Carbon County, Leola worked as an RN at the Carbon Hospital for five years and the Dragerton Hospital for three years.
She was dedicated to serving as a Sunday School Teacher for the Assembly of God Church for more than 32 years. She loved to read the Bible and prayed daily for everyone. She was always willing to help others and gave generously to anyone in need. Leola loved baking and cooking of all sorts. She made the best fried chicken, homemade biscuits and everything she made was delicious. Leola loved canning the harvest from their huge vegetable garden and she took great pride in preparing her food. Her greatest enjoyment was cooking for her family and sharing the bounty with all to enjoy. We will miss her, but we know she is surrounded by angels and reunited with “Rico” who passed away on March 12, 2011. Leola enjoyed crossword puzzles and she had a beautiful and amazing talent for embroidery work. Her stitches were flawless and she was the glue that held her family together.
She is survived by her son, Rick (Carol) Callor, Eagle, Idaho; grandchildren, Cally (Dean) Davis, Price, Carrie Callor, Salt Lake City, Doug (Misty) Callor, Lehi; six great-grandchildren, Kenny, KayLee, Andrew, Americo, Ayden and Andon; sisters-in-law, Colleen and Beverly Byrge; and many loving nieces and nephews.
