The Emery High baseball team out scored their two opponents last week 21-2 but were only able to split the pair of region 12 games. On Tuesday, Emery defeated North Sanpete 21-0 in five quick innings and then on Friday, Emery traveled to Delta and lost 2-0 in seven innings as the Rabbits finished the first half of region ball with a 4-1 record and Emery finished with a 2-3 record.
Richfield is in second place in region 12 with a 3-1 record followed by Manti at 2-2. Juab is fifth at 2-4 and North Sanpete trails at 0-5. Some teams will have postponed games to make up in the second half of region action that begins this week.
Looking at the teams to beat this season in 3-A baseball, Juan Diego leads region 11 with a 5-0 record and an overall record of 12-3. Carbon High leads region 10 with a 4-0 record and is 11-3. Cedar is leading region 9 with a 4-3 record and is 12-4 for the season.
Kash Jewkes leads the team with six home runs while Gage Bell leads with four triples. Geren Payne has hit six doubles in leading the team but Bell, Tappan Draper, Chance Huntington and Nathan Mecham each have hit three doubles.
Against North Sanpete, Nathan Mecham took the mound and pitched a one-hitter against the Hawks. Emery scored their 21 runs in four innings and the Spartans did not commit an error in the game. Emery had 14 hits in the game and the Spartans also were the recipients of 11 walks or getting hit by a pitch courtesy of Hawk pitching.
Gage Bell hit a 2-run homerun in the first inning while Curtis Mason and Tanner Ewell each had a double in the inning as Emery sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs.
Emery added eight more runs in the second inning with Nathan Mecham hitting a triple and Tappan Draper and Geren Payne hitting doubles.
After scoring just a single run in the third inning, Emery closed out their at bats with six more runs in the fourth inning.
Maybe Emery used up all their hits against the Hawks because life was tough against the Rabbits. Emery went down 1-2-3 in the first inning. In the second inning, Jewkes got Emery’s first hit of the game, a double but was left stranded on base.
In the third inning, Mason and Bell hit singles but were unable to score. In the fourth inning, Nick Stoddard and Chance Huntington each singled but again to no avail as they were left stranded on base. Emery had a single base hit in the fifth inning by Tanner Ewell and a single base hit in the seventh inning by Huntington again as Emery went scoreless. Delta pitching gave up no walks and the Rabbit fielders made no errors.
For Delta, the Rabbits had a lead-off base hit in the second inning followed by a batter walking, both would score as they got around the bases on passed balls, stolen bases and an Emery error. The eighth batter in Delta’s line-up hit a single to score them. Payne took the loss in the close game.
Emery’s three first half losses were all relatively close games and the Spartans will be looking to reverse those losses with wins as the second half begins. Emery’s two wins were blowouts and the Spartans will look to maintain that margin this half. Emery plays at home this Tuesday afternoon against Richfield.
