The Emery High Auto program is now certified in five areas. Auto teacher, Mike Kava said they are certified in engine performance, electrical, brakes, suspension and air conditioning. “An inspection team came to the shop and over a two day period went over things, they make sure you’re using the right books and teaching the right things. The team included local business people, people from Salt Lake, CEU, Community Motors, J and D Automotive and others. We passed and have plaques coming to recognize these certifications. The certification is good for a period of five years.
“We have competed in many competitions this year. We went to Weber State for the Ford Triple A, district VICA, state VICA, and a SUU contest. We did better than last year and our students grades were up considerably. We took seven kids to California where they visited Toyota headquarters, the Edelbrock Manufacturing Plant and Museum, National Hot Rod Museum, Toyota Museum and the Toyota Grand Prix Race where they raced through the town. Jason Peay, Chris Skinner, Lance Brady, Byron Curtis, Charlie Nelson, Chase Benson and Justin Keisel all went on that trip.
“At the regional VICA competition, Jason Peay outscored the competition with the highest score on the written test for high school and college students.
“We are signing the articulation agreement with CEU where the students can receive college credit for the classes they take here. We have seven students who will be receiving scholarships. We are also working on a on-the-job training program and are trying to set that up with a local auto shop and then we’ll be able to offer that option to our students,” said Kava.
