After going on the road and defeating the Manti Templars 18-5 on Tuesday, the Emery High baseball team came home and lost to Juab on Friday by a score of 10-7.
Midway through the 2011 season, two things are evident about this Emery High team, first, they are still finding enough pitching to play every game and second, this Emery team is a pretty good hitting team. Add the two together and it makes Emery have to score a lot of runs.
Against Manti, Emery scored early and then often as they scored in five of the six innings and also scored at least three runs in four of those innings. Gage Bell led the team against Manti as he went three for four at the plate plus he drew a walk plus he scored four times and he also drove in five runs. All three of Bell’s hits were triples. Geren Payne pitched for Emery and through a complete game in getting the win. Payne struck out seven Manti batters and gave up four base hits in the game.
In the first inning, four Emery batters got hit by pitches as Nathan Mecham, Payne, Kash Jewkes and Nick Stoddard each took one for the team. The first three scored and the inning ended with bases still loaded. Chance Huntington got the only hit of the inning.
In the second inning, Mecham walked, Bell tripled and Tappan Draper singled and all three would eventually score. Payne got hit by another pitch and Jewkes singled for the only other base hit in the inning. Emery left two runners on base. In the third inning, Tanner Ewell singled, Mecham walked, Bell tripled, Draper singled, Stoddard singled, Curtis Mason singled and Ewell grounded out to end the inning. Emery scored five runs and left two more runners on base. In the fourth inning, a pitch hit Bell this time up and Gage would eventually score on an overthrow to first. Emery added six more runs in the sixth inning. Mason doubled, Ewell got out, Mecham singled, Bell tripled, Draper got out, Payne walked, Jewkes walked and Huntington singled for Emery’s last base runner.
On Friday against Juab, Emery gave up four runs in the first inning and six more runs in the fourth inning but Emery controlled the rest of the innings and kept Juab in check. Stoddard pitched for Emery and gave up nine base hits in the game but the team committed four errors behind Stoddard. Emery scored a single run in the second inning, another run in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and two final runs in the seventh inning. Chance Huntington led the team offensively in this game as Chance went three for four at the plate and had two runs driven in. One of his hits was a double. In this game, the only other extra base hits were a triple by Bell and a double by Brandon Oliver. In the second inning, Stoddard got on base due to a fielder’s choice and would score on a hit by Huntington. In the fourth inning, Jewkes singled and scored on Huntington’s next single. In the fifth inning, Mecham led off with a double, Bell got hit, Draper singled and all would eventually score. Jewkes got hit by another pitch and Stoddard singled. In the seventh inning, Jewkes walked and Huntington doubled and both would score. Emery left nine runners stranded on base and had one runner picked off trying to steal a base just before Bell hit a triple. Emery had opportunities for more runs and gave away enough through errors that Emery maybe really should have won this game. Emery hosts North Sanpete on Tuesday and will travel to Delta on Friday.
