With the approaching holidays, this is an especially good time to nominate an excellent classroom teacher for an Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award, according to Ken May, general manager of the Sufco mine.
The awards program is funded by the Arch Coal Foundation. The Foundation’s teacher-recognition program is available in Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties, which surround the Dugout Canyon, Sufco and Skyline mines operated by Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal, Inc.
An application is sent immediately to teachers when nominated,” said May. “Past recipients say the application calls for introspection and thoughtful responses to its in-depth questions, so it requires time to complete. Because applications must be mailed back to us by Feb. 17, 2012, the upcoming winter break is a perfect time for nominated teachers to prepare their applications.
Take a minute today and say ‘thanks’ to a teacher who has made a difference in your life,” said May. “When teachers receive acknowledgement that they have been nominated, that also is an appreciated gift.”
Past recipients of the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award serve as judges. Applications are read multiple times and independently scored. The Arch Coal Foundation makes five $3,500 personal, cash awards to classroom teachers. The award recipients are expected to be announced in spring 2012.
Nomination forms are available in schools and in many partner locations. Partners for the program include the Office of the Governor, Utah State Office of Education, Utah Education Association, Utah School Superintendents Association, Carbon County School District, Emery County School District, Sevier County School District, North Sanpete School District, South Sanpete School District, Far West Bank, Market Express, radio stations KMTI, KLGL, KMGR, KSVC, KCYQ, KOAL, KARB, KRPX, and both TacoTime and Bookcliff Sales in Price. Nominations also may be made online at www.archteacherawards.com and the Utah Education Association website, www.myuea.org.
