Charges dismissed in child abuse case

By PATSY STODDARD Editor

On March 10, the Emery County Attorney’s Office filed with the Seventh District Court a motion to dismiss the four charges of aggravated sexual abuse of a child against David F. Owens of Ferron. Owens died on March 9. He is the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound. His body is currently at the Utah State Medical Examiners office for determination of the official cause of death.
Owens had his initial court appearance on Feb. 15 where he waived the reading of the charges and further proceedings were set for March 15 in the matter.
Owens is a retired captain from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged following an investigation by the Utah State Bureau of Investigations. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in Emery County between 1997 and 2007. Owens retired from the sheriff’s office in October of 2000. He was 74 years old at the time of his death.
Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk expressed his dismay at the turn of events in the case. His concern is for the victims in the case and their recovery and healing.
