The Emery County food bank is up and running again at their prior location. The big difference is they are operating out of a new metal building which was a joint project between Emery County and the Southeastern Utah Association of Governments. To celebrate this occasion Emery County and the AOG will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. on March 10 followed by an open house from 1-3 p.m. so the public can visit the new facility and see what it has to offer the community.
Commissioner Laurie Pitchforth said, “This building will fill an essential need in our county and community. The old food bank was a neglected facility and a new one desperately needed to be built. There is a need in our community to provide food to the hungry. Now we have a lovely, clean and nice facility where those who need extra food can come and that service will be provided. This facility will serve our county well in the years to come. We would like to invite the county residents and any interested parties to come and tour the new facility and participate in the ribbon cutting on March 10.”
The newly formed Emery County Business Chamber will host the ribbon cutting beginning at 1 p.m.
During the construction of the new building, the food bank was relocated to the old Huntington City Hall. There were a number of food drives held during this time and the food was recently brought to the new food bank to help stock the facility for its opening.
The entities donating food to the new food bank include: The Governing Youth Council from Four Corners Behavioral Health, Emery County RSVP, Emery High School, Canyon View and San Rafael junior highs, Castle Dale and Huntington elementaries and Stewarts Market all donated food to the project. Nine hundred pounds of food and dry goods were collected and RSVP collected 150 pounds of clothing items and $150 in cash to give the food bank a good start in its new location.
