MarKette Tanner, senior catcher at Emery High School, was named by both Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune to the First Team All State Softball 3A. She was the only player named by both papers to their respective all-state teams. Earlier in the season MarKette had been named Prep of the Week for the Deseret News.
MarKette graduated in May and will be playing at Snow College, Ephraim this fall.
She lived with her family in the Dominican Republic from August of 2010 until March of 2011, where she worked out daily with the Dominican National Softball Team, in preparation for her senior season at Emery High.
MarKette lead her team in on-base percentage and steals. MarKette started and played every inning of every varsity game in her four-year career at Emery High.
That impressive fact, however, doesn’t begin to capture the senior catcher’s importance to the Spartans.
Emery head softball coach Beau Stoker said, “Most important is her leadership in the unmeasured areas – keeping the girls focused, upbeat and dedicated.”
In both MarKette’s first varsity game as a ninth grader and last regular season game as a 12th grader, she hit a home run. She maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was recognized also as an academic all-state athlete. Prior to her senior year, she also played volleyball and basketball for the high school.
