Pirates continue their winning streak

The Green River Pirate boy’s basketball team continued their stellar play and are now on a 12-game winning streak and have won the region 19 crown. Green River now possesses a 16-4 season record and has a single regular season game remaining, a game at Monticello this Thursday night.
In the month of February, Green River won five games easily. They opened the month by defeating Monument Valley 72-38 as Justin Johnson scored 54 points. The next night, Green River played Navajo Mountain 111-32 with Johnson scoring 51 points.
The next week Green River defeated Whitehorse 66-42 as Johnson scored 25 points and pulled down 26 rebounds. Also that week, Green River defeated West Ridge Academy 69-36. Spencer Marshall led the team in this game with 31 points.
Finally, last week Green River continued their march to the playoffs with a resounding 64-38 win over Pinnacle Academy in a game played in Price. Johnson scored 27 points with teammate Erick Mendez adding 25 points.
With Mendez and Marshall scoring well, the Pirates appear poised to do well in the 1-A Utah State basketball days of March in Richfield. Johnson is the leading scorer in the state of Utah with a 34.65 scoring average.
In the five games played this month, the Pirates have outscored their five opponents by an average of 76 to 37. The Pirates are even more dominating in the first half of each of these games. In their five wins, Green River has outscored their opposition by an average of 43-12. Green River, for the season, is outscoring their opponents by an average score of 66.6 to 44.25, a difference of 22.35.
Green River is ranked fifth in the latest Deseret News 1-A poll behind Bryce Valley 18-1, Piute 17-2, Panguitch 14-5 and Duchesne 17-3.
Against Monument Valley, Mendez scored seven points, Adrian Escalante scored five points, TJ Hughes scored four points and Jordan Olsen scored two points. Against Navajo Mountain, Marshall scored 17 points, Mendez scored 11 points, Nick Corrigan and Colton Davis each scored eight points, Olsen and Jon Mendez scored four points with Escalante, Hughes, AB Mendoza and Tony Dominguez scoring two points each.
Against Whitehorse, Mendez scored 17 points, Marshall 11 points, Escalante six points, Olsen three points and Corrigan and Hughes two points. Against West Ridge, Johnson scored 17 points and had 19 rebounds, Mendez scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds, Escalante three points and Corrigan two points. Against Pinnacle, Marshall scored eight points, Olsen three points and Chance Pfander one point.
Green River closes out the season with a game at Monticello this Thursday night.
