Two region victories last week have propelled the Emery High Lady Spartan basketball team into the first round of this year’s 2-A Utah State playoffs on a high note. Emery defeated Grand 76-20 and San Juan 44-37 and will now enter the tournament as the region 15 second place team. Emery will open the tournament against Enterprise this Friday night at 8 p.m. at Snow College, the home of the first round.
All 2-A basketball teams will converge on Snow College this week to play the opening round. Games will start at 9 a.m. and continue all day with Emery playing in the final game of the day. Winners of games this day will advance to the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield the following Thursday to continue the tournament. Losers of games at Snow College will see their season come to a halt.
Emery and Enterprise met in the opening game of the season at the Sevier Valley Center with the Lady Spartans winning that game 47-37. Since that game, Enterprise has won 10 games and lost nine whereas the Lady Spartans have struggled in winning five more games while losing 11 in an up and down year. At times, the team looks really good and at other times, the team has struggled on the floor.
Against Grand, Emery got off to a great start against a team that simply isn’t very good. Emery won the first quarter 23-0 as everything went the Spartans way but this kind of was expected. Emery won the second quarter 19-8 and led 42-8 at the half.
Because of the mismatch, Emery went deep into their bench in this game. Twelve different Spartan players scored in the game with junior Jeridi Price leading the way with 11 points and freshman Bailey Rasmussen next with 10 points.
Emery won the third quarter 18-7 and the final period 16-5 in the blowout win. Also scoring in the game were Hannah Dyer and Sidnee Conder with nine points each, Kim Oldroyd and Blayr Jeffs with seven points each, Shelby Allred scored six points, Laurel Roundy scored five points, Ashton Bell scored four points, Ashlynn Allred and Cassidy Labrum each scored three points. Kelsie Cox closed out the scoring with two points.
Emery hosted San Juan Friday night and used a big fourth quarter to claim the win. Emery outscored the Broncos 18-8 in the final quarter to grab the lead and win the game. The game was actually won in the closing minutes with Emery playing well to claim the win.
Jeridi Price led the team with 19 points, with 11 rebounds and with four steals. Price came through with a good game to help propel the team to the win.
Blayr Jeffs scored eight points, Kim Oldroyd scored six points, Ashlynn Allred scored five points, Hannah Dyer scored four points and Laurel Roundy scored two points. Emery will close out the regular season with a game against Wasatch this Tuesday night in Heber City.
