The two Emery High basketball teams are entering their final week of region 15 games with positioning for the 2012 Utah State 2-A basketball tournament still somewhat up in the air for both teams. Last week saw the Emery boys defeat Richfield 56-49 while the Lady Wildcats returned the favor and defeated the Lady Spartans 59-39.
Both teams will play their final two region contests this week. For the Lady Spartans, two victories would cement the team in second place and ensure them a home playoff game. Emery travels to Grand on Tuesday night and should return with a win against the hapless Moab team. On Saturday, Emery will host San Juan and the winner of that game will clinch second place in the region. San Juan also has a game against Grand this week.
For the Emery boy’s team, two wins this week should also clinch second place for the Spartans. After pulling the upset last week, Emery is now in prime position to sneak ahead of the Wildcats for that home playoff game. Richfield is currently 4-3 but their lone remaining game is against South Sevier, a game they should lose. Emery plays San Juan and Grand in their final games and should win both of these contests. With two wins, Emery would go to 5-3 and stay ahead of Richfield. Richfield would finish at 4-4 with the loss.
Last week was huge for the Emery boys. By defeating the Richfield team, they changed their postseason future tremendously.
Emery battled Richfield hard for all four quarters before snaring the win. Emery led 11-8 after the first quarter, 27-24 at the half and then 41-32 after three quarters. Richfield tried to battle back in the final period but Emery stayed with them shot for shot to snare the much-needed win.
Dawson Jensen had his best scoring night of the season as the Emery junior scored 23 points to lead the Spartans to the win. Seniors Dallon Cologie and Jordan Cox each scored nine points for Emery, as their senior leadership was vital throughout the game.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Curtis Mason with six points, Brendan Jorgensen with five points and Logan Tuttle and Spencer Labrum with two points each.
The Emery boys now stand 3-3 in region play and 9-8 for the season.
The Richfield Lady Wildcats showed the Emery High Lady Spartans why they are ranked number one in the state in the 2-A ranks with a convincing home victory.
Emery, after losing at home 47-40 and actually had opportunities to win the previous game, was looking to tie the season series when they traveled to Richfield. Richfield had other plans. Richfield dominated the game from the start and the Spartans were shown no mercy until the final period.
Emery was down 18-7 after the first quarter and 35-14 at the half. Richfield won quarter three 19-11 to lead 54-25 entering the final quarter. Emery won that period 14-5 against the Richfield younger players.
Shooting woes continued plaguing the Spartan team. Emery shot 23 percent from the field in this game, a percentage not conducive to winning many games. They went 13 for 50 from in front of the 3-point line and two for 14 behind it. They also only shot seven for 16 at the free throw line for 44 percent.
In the Richfield game, Blayr Jeffs scored 12 points with Kim Oldroyd scoring nine points. Jeridi Price and Laurel Roundy each scored five points, Hannah Dyer scored three points, Ashlynn Allred and Cassidy Labrum each scored two points and Kelsie Cox scored one point.
