The Emery High track teams participated in the BYU High School Invitational track meet last weekend and the teams came home encouraged by their results. With more than 100 total schools representing Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada, Emery participated against other small 1A/2A schools with 31 schools in this division.
The Emery girls finished third but only two points out of second place. The Emery boys finished sixth but only four points out of fifth place. The two teams together finished in fifth place but only three points out of third place.
With the region 15 meet coming up this Tuesday in preparation for next week’s Utah State track meet, region 15 was well represented at BYU. For the boys, Grand finished first, Richfield finished second and San Juan 11th besides Emery’s finish. For the girls, San Juan was fifth and Grand was eighth with Richfield 11th.
First for the Emery girls, the three Emery relay teams all placed well as the 4×100 team finished third as did the 4×400 team. The sprint medley relay team finished second. Members of the sprint medley team were Catherine Dyer, Blayr Jeffs, Hailee Rogers and Hannah Dyer. Members of the 4×400 team were Catherine Dyer, Hannah Dyer, Blayr Jeffs and Hailee Rogers. Members of the 4×100 team were Catherine Dyer, Hailee Rogers, Blayr Jeffs and Ashlynn Allred.
In individual events, Ashlynn Allred set a school record at 25.85 eclipsing the old record of 26.04 in winning the 200-meter race. Allred also ran well in the 100-meter races during the two days as she ran against the fastest girls in Utah. Allred ended up finishing fourth against the premier competition. Allred also finished third in the long jump with a jump of 16’2. 5″, more than a foot shy of her best jump of the year.
Jessica Guymon was the only other individual to place in the meet. Guymon finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 104’8″.
The boy’s were led by Brendon Jorgensen’s first place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Brendon ran a 40.99 to win by almost a full second. Jorgensen also finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles and seventh in the long jump.
Emery’s sprint medley relay team finished second and the 4×400 relay team finished sixth. Members of the sprint medley team were David Dyer, Tyler Pulli, Nagel Viera and Scott Jackson. Members of the other relay team were David Dyer, Nagel Viera, Tyler Pulli and Jared Shakespaere.
Also placing for the boys were Taylor Hansen in the high jump in third place seventh place finishes by Scott Jackson in the 400-meters and Brandon McCandless in the shot put.
Coach Todd Jeffs expects the region meet to come down to Emery and San Juan on the girl’s side and to Grand and Richfield and then Emery on the boy’s side.
