The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team lost two games last week that maybe they could have and should have won as they played two non-region contests in preparation for this weeks 2-A Utah State softball tournament in St. George.
On Tuesday, Emery hosted Gunnison and the Spartans aided the Bulldogs to a win as the Emery defense committed nine errors in the game. Emery out hit Gunnison 11 to six but Gunnison won 9-5. Jaiden Huntington hit a double in the game for the only extra base hit for Emery.
On Thursday, Emery traveled to Uintah and lost the game in extra innings 9-8. Emery scored three runs in the first inning and another in the second to lead 4-2 after two innings. After Uintah had taken the lead at 5-4, Emery scored three runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead at 7-5. Uintah scored a single run in the fifth inning and then another single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score.
Emery scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to regain the lead only to see Uintah hit a homerun in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Uintah hit four home runs in the game while Auminee Bennett hit a homerun for Emery. Kaitlyn Thomson had a double for Emery’s only other extra base hit.
Emery starts state action this Thursday at the Canyons Softball complex in St. George at 2 p.m. Emery will play Millard. The complex is at 1890 W. 2000 N. in St. George.
