Lady Spartan track takes first in region

The Emery High Lady Spartan track team traveled south to Richfield to participate in the 2012 region 15 track meet and the team came home as the region champions. With 10 different girls scoring points for the team plus the three relay teams, Emery scored 88 points to lead the way. San Juan was second with 80 points followed by Grand with 74 points and Richfield with 73 points. South Sevier scored 20 points.
The Spartans came home with five individual champions and two relay champions out of 16 different events. Ashlynn Allred led the way for Emery by winning the long jump, the 100-meter race, the 200-meter race and she ran the final leg of the winning 4×100 relay.
Allred, at the BYU Invitational last week, set a new school record in the 200-meter race and at the region meet, Allred set another new school record, this time in the long jump. On her first attempt, Allred jumped 17 feet 9.25 inches. This is the third longest jump by any young lady in the entire state this season. Allred did not jump again.
Ashlynn’s winning time in the 100 was 12.71, a half second faster than second place. Allred’s time in the 200 was 26.48, again a half second faster than the nearest finisher.
Hailee Rogers in the 400-meter race and Jessica Guymon, in the 800-meter race were also region champions as these two had gutsy performances to win. One had to appreciate the determination both of these runners had in making sure that they were victorious. Neither held anything back. Rogers’ time was 1:02.03 and Guymon’s time was 2:36.01.
Emery also won the 4×100 relay with a team consisting of Catherine Dyer, Hailee Rogers, Blayr Jeffs and Allred. Their winning time was 51.38 while South Sevier was second at 53.10.
The Emery sprint medley relay team also won. This is a race where the first two runners run 200 meters, the third runner runs 400 meters and the final runner runs 800 meters. The first two legs were run by Catherine Dyer and Kelsie Cox with the third leg ran by Hailee Rogers. Hanna Dyer, in running the 800 leg, was not going to lose and despite being caught on the final turn, outran the South Sevier runner down the straightaway and the team won 4:42.19 to 4:46.77.
Jessica Guymon finished second in the javelin and fourth in the high jump. Jacee Bird finished second in the 1600-meter race. Catherine Dyer finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Blayr Jeffs finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 400-meters. Hailee Rogers finished fourth in the long jump. Kelsie Cox was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Kassidee Oakson was fourth in the 3200 meters and Jacee Bird was fifth. Whitney Withers was fifth in the discus.
Emery’s 4×400 relay team of Catherine Dyer, Hanna Dyer, Jessica Guymon and Kelsie Cox finished third.
The Emery boy’s team scored 38 points to finish in third place. Richfield scored 125 and Grand scored 103 as these two teams dominated the action. San Juan scored 35 points and South Sevier scored 34 points.
Scoring for the Emery boys was led by Brendon Jorgensen. Brendon finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, second in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump. Scott Jackson finished fourth in the 200-meter race and fourth in the 400-meter race. Tyler Rowley finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Emery’s high jumping trio of Taylor Hansen, Gavin Oviatt and Justan Potter finished second, third and fourth to score points for Emery. Hansen jumped 6′, Oviatt jumped 5’8″ and Potter jumped 5’6″.
Brandon McCandless finished fifth in both the discus and the shot put while Kalin Reynolds finished fifth in the javelin for Emery.
Emery’s 4×100 relay team of David Dyer, Scott Jackson, Brendon Jorgensen and Jared Shakespeare finished fourth. The sprint medley team also finished fourth. This team consisted of David Dyer, Tyler Pulli, Tyler Rowley and Nagel Viera. The 4×400 team of Dyer, Pulli, Shakespeare and Viera finished fifth. Next up for the Emery tracksters will be the state championships at BYU this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
