PRICE- Thelma Evelyn Stone Horsley passed away on Oct. 30, 2012, after a long and difficult battle with myelofibrosis and sideroblastic anemia.She was born on Sept. 24, 1924, to Alfred J. and Hansine Kristine Robertson Stone, and raised in the Norwegian immigrant culture of northern Minnesota. Growing up on the shores of Rainy Lake, Thelma had a great love for swimming, fishing, and boating. She had a happy, carefree childhood, and enjoyed an especially close relationship with her Aunt Elisa and Uncle Emil. As a teenager, she developed a great talent for creating and sewing clothing.
During the height of World War II Thelma graduated from high school. All three of her brothers had gone to war, and she wanted to be of service also. She and her best friend, Lois Trepanier, joined the Civil Service and were willing to go where most needed. They were sent far from their tiny rural neighborhood to Hill Field at Ogden, Utah. It was here that Thelma met her husband, Albert Ross Horsley, who was serving in the Army Air Corps.
Thelma and Ross were married on Nov. 3, 1945 in International Falls, Minnesota. Ross was transferred to an airfield in Tennessee, and Thelma found work in Mishawaka, Ind., where she stayed with friends. Times were difficult, and they were grateful that their first child, Kathleen Ann, was born as the New Year’s baby derby winner, thus providing them with many nursery items. After the war, the couple settled in for a lifelong stay in Price, Utah. A second child, Douglas Ross, was soon born to them. In 1966 their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
Thelma sewed all her children’s clothing, and created beautiful woolen shirts for her husband. She was soon adding to the family income by sewing for others also. She worked as a seamstress for Quality Cleaners, and then for Koret of California. She taught 4-H sewing groups, and worked in the PTA. Thelma taught young people in Sunday school classes for many years, as well as serving in ward and stake Relief Society presidencies. She was an avid genealogist, spending countless hours researching and providing for the temple work of more than 2,000 Norwegian ancestors.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Arnold E. Stone, Selvin J. Stone, and Floyd H. Stone; sisters-in-law and their spouses: Lola (Vyron) Evans, Erma (Edwin) Burnside, and Donna (Kenneth) Davis.
She is survived by her husband, and children Kathleen (Kitty) and Ronald Ford, and Douglas and Alexis Horsley, and grandchildren Kim and Scott Hathaway, Ryan and Samantha Horsley, David and Kimberly Horsley, and Barry and Rebecca Horsley. She leaves 12 beloved great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “Grandma Great”, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Price LDS Second Ward Chapel (449 North 100 East). A viewing was held Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 from 6- 7 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price, Utah and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
