Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Finals, was held on November 9-10 in South Jordan. The Top 12 in each event (based on money won through out the circuit for the year) get to compete in the finals for both a “finals Champion” and “Year End Circuit Champion”. The year began in November 2011 and ended Sept. 29, 2012. RMPRA sanctioned Rodeo’s located from Downey, Idaho to Pahrump, Nev. and all points in between (Castle Dale’s Memorial Day Rodeo is one of the sanctioned rodeos. There are 38 total rodeos not including the finals. RMPRA consists of approx 800 members.
Total prize money paid out during the year by RMPRA Sanctioned Rodeos is $527,683.00. (Total awarded at the finals $52,050).
Approximate miles traveled by the 108 contestants that made it to the finals is 1.8 million miles.
Four Emery County Cowboys made it to the finals: Justin Truman, Huntington, went into the finals standing fourth. In round one of the finals he roped and tied a calf in 9.5 seconds putting him in second for the first round Friday night. In round two, Saturday night he quickened up with a time of 8.3 seconds but broke a barrier and got a 10 second penalty which moved him out of the money for the finals. He ended up fifth in the year end standings.
Chase Sherman and Kashe Potter, both of Huntington qualified in the bull riding, Sherman going into the finals number two and Kash number 12 in the standings respectively. In the first round, Sherman drew “Not So Purple”, the 2011 Bull of the Finals and was bucked off at just a little over 5 seconds. In the second round he rode “El Classico” for 83 points which was enough to keep him in second and walk away as Reserve Champion of the 2012 season. Kashe Potter bucked off both bulls.
Preston Sessions, originally from Heber and now living in Ferron (He married Brandee Behling, the daughter of Mike and Kayleen Behling), qualified in Bareback riding and going into the finals in the number two hole. In round one he split second place with Brian Jones with an 80 point ride on Purple People Eater. In round two he drew Painted Robin and made a 73 point ride which moved him into third place for the finals, but enough to win him Reserve Champion Year End titles for the circuit.
Rodeo announcer Monroe Magnuson was the event announcer, he said, “It was a pretty cool finals, and really fun to announce.”
