Cleveland School Claims Second Runner-up Honors in Statewide Competition
UDOT recognizes Cleveland Elementary’s efforts to educate and encourage students to start the year by getting in the habit of safely walking and biking to school
UDOT announced Cleveland Elementary in Emery County has been named the second runner-up in the Student Neighborhood Access Program’s (SNAP) 2012 “Walk More in Four” statewide competition. Cleveland Elementary, which had the state’s third highest percentage of students walking and biking to school during September, has won $100 for the school’s safety committee.
Cleveland Elementary had 47 percent of its student body walking and biking regularly to school during September, three times above the United States average.
“We commend the students at Cleveland Elementary for starting the year off on the right foot by walking and biking to school and for setting a good example for other Utah students,” said Robert Hull, UDOT Director of Traffic and Safety. “The efforts of students statewide have reduced traffic around schools and have encouraged this healthy activity.”
Nationwide, the number of students walking and biking to school has significantly decreased in recent decades. In 1969, approximately 50 percent of children walked or biked to school. Today, that number has dropped below 15 percent.
The annual UDOT SNAP “Walk More in Four” challenge encourages Utah students to walk or bike to school at least three days each week during the four weeks in September. Students chart their progress for the chance to win donated prizes, including helmets, scooters and bikes. Nearly 7,500 students statewide completed this year’s challenge. More than 700 prizes, including bikes, scooters and helmets, are being awarded.
