At the May Huntington City Council meeting, the Council passed Ordinance 1-2013 which further regulated livestock within Huntington City limits and more specifically, regulated pigs and how close they can be to a neighboring residence.
In that ordinance, pigs cannot be raised within 30 feet of any dwelling on the same lot nor within 75 feet of a dwelling on a neighboring lot. With the exception of the Grange place on 300 East, one cannot have a breeding operation between 400 North and 400 South and between 550 West and 400 East within any residential zone.
The Council also went through a presentation by the city treasurer on a revised 2013 City budget and a proposed city budget for 2014. The council will make any adoptions at the June city council meeting.
Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon and Councilman Jeff Cowley thanked all the citizens that came out and assisted in the planting of the flower containers up and down Main Street. Shortly after the planting, several flowers were pulled up and destroyed so city residents are asked to be mindful and watch for vandalism in their area and to report it if observed.
Heritage Days planning is complete and all should enjoy a week long celebration culminating with music and fireworks by the rodeo grounds. The City is looking at changing the actual location of the shooting of the fireworks and bringing them closer to the people.
On July 3, Huntington will have an ice cream social at the park followed by a concert featuring the group No Limits, a group brought back by demand from last year. Following the concert, under the coordination of the fire department, the city will have a similar child fireworks show with sparklers on the ball field at the city park. All are invited to bring their own fireworks to the park and to participate.
Councilman Mark Justice reported the sidewalk project is under way and the contractor is making good progress. Justice also reported there are several places in town with curb and gutter only going half the block and the water after rain storms is flowing off the gutter and into a pond area that allows for the breeding of mosquitoes. This will be priority for the city when money allows.
Councilperson Gloria Wilson reported several fire fighters participated in training in Moab and that they did very well in the skills test and all had a good time. Wilson also reported the city crossing guards have new vests and it is reported they can be seen better by drivers.
