A call came into the Emery County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 2 from a missing man’s family. He was due back in Missouri but hadn’t returned. The family figured he was in the Emery County/Wayne County area.
The man’s daughter said she had last spoken to her father on July 7. His neighbor had contacted her and said her father was supposed to be home on July 28 and he hadn’t returned. The neighbor had last spoken to him on July 12.
The man’s daughter said he didn’t have an exact itinerary but was visiting several areas and could be in Breckenridge, Colo. Canyonlands, Capital Reef or Horseshoe Canyon.
The vehicle he was in was a white 2009 Toyota Prius. The missing man was listed as 73 year old Grant Welland.
The vehicle was located at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead. The Wayne County deputy searched all night but was unable to locate the subject. A chopper was called out on Aug. 3. Emery County Search and Rescue responded to where the vehicle was found and began searching.
The victim’s body was found at 11:43 a.m. on Aug. 3. He had apparently fallen into a hole.
Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk said the man’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office to determine the exact cause of death.
