The Enterprise Wolves won the Utah 2-A State volleyball tournament last weekend with dominating performances all meet long as they were not going to be denied the championship. Enterprise closed out the tourney with a 25-22, 25-12, 25-19 sweep over region 15 champion San Juan to claim the trophy.
Enterprise finished second last year and were determined to win this season. They never lost a set in dominating each of their games. Junior Riley Lyman and senior Dakota Robinson led the team as they dominated the frontline throughout the season. Enterprise is the smallest 2-A school but they didn’t let size get in their way. Lyman had 21 kills and Robinson 17 in the championship game.
San Juan was led all season by junior Tatiana Su’esu’e and she will be back next season to terrorize region 15 again. She had 15 kills in the final game.
The Emery Spartan volleyball team had a couple of personalities throughout the tournament as they played four games, split the four games and finished seventh overall. The week was a tale of two teams, one very aggressive and one kind of playing not to lose. Coach Kris Bell after the game, “This was heartbreaking. We have to remember the good from this season, work on it and make next season better.”
Emery opened the tournament by defeating Layton Christian 3-1 with the scores being 25-16, 25-19, 22-25 and 27-25. As one can see by the scores of this game, Emery dominated two games and then held on in the other two.
Emery then faced South Summit in the quarterfinals and lost in five games. South Summit won the first set 25-20 with the Spartans winning the next two 25-20 and 25-21. South Summit won the fourth easily 25-13 to send the game to the final set. Emery lost that one 17-15 after leading 13-8. The winner of this game went into the semifinals and faced Enterprise.
On Saturday Emery played in the consolation bracket and faced region 15 for Grand in the first game of the day. Emery defeated Grand 3-1. Emery won the first two sets by dominating the play with the scores being 25-16 and 25-17. In the first set, Emery jumped out to an 8-2 lead, improved to 14-6 and 20-8 as they easily won. In the second set, Emery went from a 5-3 lead to a lead of 17-7 as again they won easily.
In the third set, Emery was a different team as they just hung around with the Devils until Grand finally won 25-21. Emery led at 2-1 and at 18-17 for their only two leads of this game. In the final game, Emery took the lead at 17-15 and then won easily from there by the score of 25-22.
Emery then faced Beaver in a game that decided fifth and seventh places. Beaver led throughout as they wanted this game more than Emery and won in three straight sets. The scores were 25-11, 25-18 and 25-21. Emery’s only lead of the game was at 20-17 in the final set.
Coach Bell added, “We’ve got next year to look forward to, we’ve got to get together and just play. We have all but one player back.”
Delta defeated South Summit for third place with the Wildcats finishing fourth. Gunnison defeated Kanab in the game for sixth and eighth.
Coach Bell didn’t want to designate any one player after the season was over as their best hitter, server, setter or even best player. “We relied on the whole team to win and not just one girl, we will win or lose as a team,” said Bell.
