All of us have that one extra curricular activity in our lives that makes us go and do things that any other sane human being would consider to be nuts. We all have that one passionate item that time, money or presence of bodily danger seems to have no place in the relevance of decision making when it comes to participating or not.
For some of us it is fishing or hunting, for others of us it is gambling or rafting. For me, I guess, it was ball games. Whether playing or broadcasting or watching, whether softball or baseball or football or whatever, it was no big deal for me to drive five hours for an one hour contest.
For my son Adam and his friend Jeff, also an Emery County alumni, it is quad racing. It is putting yourself on a 4- wheeler and doing all sorts of just plain stupid stuff.
Now I know that most of you have a 4-wheeler or a 3-wheeler or an off-road bike in your backyard that you enjoy riding out in the desert. And I know that you also enjoy going real fast sometimes and doing that occasional 3- 4 foot jump that makes you feel real good inside.
But that is not what I’m talking about here with my son. No not these guys. They like jumping their bikes off cliffs and landing 50 feet down the mountainside or riding so fast that when they hit a jump they sail through the air another 50 feet or they take corners at five times the speed that normal people would think of. And when they crash, and they do crash, they just jump back on and keep going.
These two over the past several years have not been satisfied with traveling to local racetracks like Delta or Richfield or St George every other weekend of the year.
These two do not like our exotic Utah destinations. These two think that they have to use their vast financial resources and sparse vacation time to travel the United States in search of another track calling their names.
They have been this year to Lake Havasu and Phoenix and San Diego and they hear San Bernadino calling their names next week. They have been to St Louis and Houston and Tennessee and Denver. They are talking about Detroit.
It doesn’t matter if the track is indoors or out, long or short. They do desert racing that is like 50 miles long or something. It doesn’t matter the venue, just that there is a venue. They ride in dust and rain and mud and snow, the conditions just do not matter, the ride does.
They spend thousands on bikes, just to see if they can do it faster or higher or for more excitement. They are nuts but they enjoy it.
And that is the secret of their happiness. They play, they enjoy, they work hard and they live. Passion keeps us alive and makes life worth living, they just take it to extremes.
