On a much warmer, though very windy afternoon, the Emery High Lady Spartans defeated the Delta Rabbits 10-4 to take their region record to 2-0.
Michelle Johansen pitched a six-hit complete game to come away with the win. Michelle, a senior for Coach Tom Hansen, also was 4 for 4 at the plate with three rbi’s. She picked up an rbi with each of her first three hits in the ball game and she also scored three times. Mackell Huntington and Cortni Jensen were each 3 for 4 at the plate and picked up an rbi in the game. These three are also the leaders on the team in rbi’s for the season.
Emery scored twice in the first inning to take the lead that they never let go. Stacie Giles opened with a single and scored on Huntington’s double. MacKell then scored on Johansen’s single. Delta picked up a run in the top of the second inning on three singles before a double play got Emery out of the inning.
Emery scored three more runs in the three inning to increase their lead to 5-1. Huntington singled, Jensen singled, Johansen singled again and Amber Gardner had a sacrifice fly to bring the last runner home. Several misplays in the field allowed Emery to move around the bases. Eve Guymon and Adrian McNee also had single in the inning but were left on base.
After Delta added another run in the top of the fourth inning, Emery added three more of their own to now lead 8-2. Huntington, Jensen, Johansen and Gardner had back-to-back singles as the first three Spartans scored again. Emery added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jensen and Johansen singled and Gardner picked up two more rbi’s with another single.
Besides the double play that ended the second inning for the Spartans, they also added another in the third inning.
Emery picked up 16 hits in the victory and now travels to Mt. Pleasant today to play the North Sanpete Hawks at 3:00pm.
