Last week at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale, the Carbon Lady Dinos prevailed at the end of an up and down night for both teams to defeat the Lady Spartans in the home volleyball opener in five sets. The scores for the Dinos were 25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-11. Carbon started off strong, faltered in the middle and finished by being consistent to win the contest between the two local rivals. In game one, the two teams were tied at 9-9 only to see Carbon jump up at 17-11 and then the Dinos held on to win.
Game two was all Emery. The teams were tied at 4-4 before Emery sprinted out to an 8-4 lead and then a 17-10 and a final of 25-15. Emery stopped Carbon from scoring three straight points at any point in the game and the Dinos scored two points in a row only four times.
Emery meanwhile thoroughly dominated the game as Ashton Bell had several great blocks and a kill to score the final point, Ashlynn Allred had three kill shots along with great play on the back line, Emily Olsen and Bailey Rasmussen contributed kill shots while Cassidy Labrum had an ace for serve as the team played well together.
Game three saw the Spartans sprint out to leads of 10-3 and 18-8 as the good team play continued and then something happened as the Dinos came back alive and started playing their game again. Carbon lost the game to be down 2-1 but outscored the Spartans 14-7 over the end of the game.
In game four, the Dinos sprinted to an 18-9 lead as Carbon continued domination started in the previous game. Emery was down 21-10 and then scored four straight with Labrum serving and the Spartans outhit and outscored the Dinos 12-2 to get back in the gap only to see the Dinos score the final two points as the comeback fell short.
Game five was tied at 3-3, 7-7,9-9 and Emery actually led 11-10 before Carbon scored, got the serve back and scored the final four points to win the game and the match.
Emery was more consistent throughout the evening than they have been in previous seasons and give the Emery fans hope for the future. In the final game, Bell had three kills to score points 5,8 and 9. Allred led the team throughout the night with at least seven kills Labrum and Bayler Griffin each had several aces on serves during the match. The team features six juniors that play a lot along with one senior and one sophomore. This bodes well for this season and next as this team will only get better and better.
The volleyball team also participated in a tournament in St. George in pre-season action.
