Huntington City dedicates miners memorial
Huntington City dedicated its new miners monument on a Nov. 22 at the miners memorial park. Mayor Hilary Gordon welcomed everyone to the event. Sheila Sebring gave the opening prayer and the pledge of allegiance was led by scout Tayvan Cook. The Huntington Glee Club sang Stout Hearted Men.
Mayor Gordon thanked Boyd Wilson for his work on the miners monument.
She said, “It was a wonderful thing to do and I appreciate everything he and Jackie did. In 2007 was the Crandall Canyon mine disaster. We have a special place to remember them. This new monument will be a reminder of how challenging the coal industry is and how strong the people of Emery County are. We believe in and support the coal industry. I want to again thank Boyd and also Vernell Rowley, he provided a thick book with miners information and histories from Carbon and Emery counties. Any miners left off the list can be added.
Wilson said “It is a privilege to be here today. I want to thank the mayor and city counsel members and the city employees. Eldon Holmes was the artist that created the insignia on the monument. Thanks to Glenn Sebring for the use of the fork lift to set the stone in place. Thanks to my wife for letting me have the time to work on the project. The idea for the project came when I drove up here to look at the monument and thought why not have a monument with all the names of Huntington/Lawrence miners on who died in coal mines. It’s been a privilege to work on this. Kent Nielson did the work on the base stone.”
Lond Wakefield read the names of those on the monument while the monument was unveiled.
Pastor Carl Sitterud presented the dedicatory prayer for the monument. He said his father’s name is listed on the monument. He died at the age of 42 when Pastor Carl was 13 years old. “Our hearts still grieve for the men listed on this monument. The names listed are fathers, sons, husbands and hard working men who cared for their country. We miss them. They are never forgotten. They reflect the best in all of us. We dedicate this monument to the miners and their families.”

Huntington City encourages all the citizens to go to the miners monument to look at the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit of others.
The monument is next to the Crandall Canyon monument.
