The Emery High volleyball team enters the final two weeks of region 15 competition solidly in second place in the region with a 5-1 region record after having defeated South Sevier last week 3-0 in a match held in Castle Dale.
Emery, ranked fifth in the 2-A class by the Salt Lake City newspapers, owns a 5-1 region record trailing only second-ranked San Juan. The Broncos are 7-0 in the region. Grand High, the third place team, is sitting with a 3-4 record.
Last week Emery defeated the South Sevier Rams for the second time this region season. Scores of those games were 27-25, 25-22 and 25-20.
In the first game of the set, Emery and the Rams battled evenly throughout the game and were tied at 18, at 19 and at 21. After Emery went up 22-21, South Sevier scored the next three points to lead 24-22 and put the Spartans on the ropes.
After Emery got the serve back, Cassidy Labrum served a point and the score was tied at 24. The Rams went back up by one at 25-24 but the Spartans refused to quit, tied the score at 25 and then with Bayler Griffin serving, scored the final two points to win the game.
In the second game, the two teams were tied at 15. South Sevier went up by three at 18-15 with the Spartans responding to score two points to trail 18-17. The Rams then went to 22-17 and once again the Spartans were in jeopardy but once again Emery answered the run with a run of their own. Emery got the serve back and with Ashton Bell serving, Emery scored the final seven points to grab the win.
In game three, Emery did away with the suspense midway through the game and this time won going away. After trailing early at 7-2 and 13-8, Emery grabbed the lead at 17-14 and then cruised to the win.
Emery has two games scheduled at home this week as the Spartans will host San Juan on Tuesday and Grand on Wednesday. Sophomore action starts at 4, junior varsity 5:15, and varsity 6:30 p.m.
