Cleveland City held their monthly council meeting Taylor Cordova approached the council for use of the old town hall for her dance class. The classes will be for two hours on Tuesday and three hours on Wednesday. The classes will run through November.
The fee will remain the same as it was last year. The only issue that will conflict with the dance classes is the spook alley, which is scheduled for Oct. 11. Setup will take place that week, but it is not anticipated to be a problem.
The 2013 primary election results were read and the council canvassed the election results. The results will be sent to the Lt. Governor’s office to be officially accepted.
The council began discussing Cleveland Days review and the 2014 celebration. A few of the ideas for next years celebration include cowboy poetry, dutch oven cook off, family BBQ night, movie night and a Zumba marathon. There will be no Spring Expo next year. The city will have to come up with ideas to raise funds. The 2013 celebration went very well. The entertainment needs to start earlier. The location of the coaster run needs to be changed and someone needs to oversee the event for next year. More sponsorship is needed for the fireworks show and the Color Me Cleveland event.
The first payment for the B and C loan is due on the one ton truck on Oct. 1. It is budgeted for $8,000 for five years.
The council discussed the council and Cleveland city employees getting their food handlers permit. A motion was made to pay for the cost of obtaining the permit and unanimously approved.
Three citizens submitted before pictures for the clean up contest and one citizen submitted an after picture. Karson Jensen is the winner in the clean up contest.
A council member reported, Emery Telcom (who was not present) asked why Cleveland collected a cable tax while the satellite providers were untaxed? The council will look into the tax and see the circumstances behind the tax.
The council discussed whether to continue with the Angel Tree program. People will typically call in or submit names for the project. The Angel Tree program will continue this year because of the overall positive comments the council has received.
Councilman Ward suggested looking into buying batting cages with the recreation money. He will look into how much the cages cost and the expenses to maintain them.
Councilman Grimm stated the fall clean up needs to be in the city newsletter. The city needs to be more proactive with the enforcement of town clean up and farm equipment parked on the street. There is a tree on the side of the road that impairs driver vision. The limbs will be cut down, so this does not become a further hazard.
Councilwoman Mecham said she received a letter from a citizen concerning drinking and smoking in the park during Cleveland Days. In order to enforce this, signs will have to be posted with the ordinance that prohibits it. The curb next to the school still needs to be painted. There was a water break near Cindi’s on Labor Day. It has been repaired. There was also a water leak on 900 West, but it is a North Emery Water Users issue.
The fire station will need to put in a ramp and a handrail prior to the June 2014 primary election. The county is looking into grants for this project. If a grant is not awarded the cost should be nominal. The secondary water will be turned off by the end of September. The council will consider the cost of sending out the newsletter. It can be sent via e-mail for any citizen who wishes to receive it saving on the cost of postage stamps.
The council voted to pay the bills and the meeting was adjourned.
